His current mission is to turn around a Jets offense that was moribund last season.

The Jets’ offensive coordinator has quite a challenge, especially with an unsettled quarterback situation.

He also has a lot of teaching to do, attempting to get the entire Jets’ offense up to speed on this playbook.

Let him focus on his job – which is a very difficult one.

Nothing else.

Media tours can come later.

“As Jets fans brace for a quarterback competition that threatens to burn deep into August, New York’s offensive coordinator is open to ending the drama much sooner,” wrote Sessler. “Marty Mornhinweg told Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News he’d rather it be over by mid-June, after the Jets wrap organized team activities. As for the public perception that Mark Sanchez versus Geno Smith will remain a news topic until the end of days, he isn’t buying it.”

So, according to the Daily News, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms, are already out of the sweepstakes.

The paper is also is reporting a decision on who will start could be make before training camp starts.

“The Jets’ ballyhooed quarterback competition may be over before Mark Sanchez and Geno  Smith even make it to Cortland, N.Y., for the start of training camp in late  July,” wrote Manish Mehta. “While the prevailing thought is that the incumbent and the rookie will  square off in a summer-long battle to determine the starter, the Jets braintrust  isn’t averse to declaring a winner in the coming weeks.”

They should be averse to it?

The battle needs to take place not only in OTA’s and mini-camp, but in training camp and in preseason games.

The Jets’ brass needs to see as much as possible from these two before making a decisions.

And anybody in their brass who “isn’t averse to declaring a winner in the coming weeks,” needs a reality check.

“Mark Sanchez is akin to Freddy or Jason in the horror flicks: You try to kill him off, but he keeps coming back to torment even more,” wrote Schein in a recent column of the league’s website. ”Sanchez suddenly has that George Costanza feel to him: I don’t think he could get fired if he tried, even if he drove around the Jets‘ complex in Florham Park, N.J., dragging the Super Bowl III trophy behind his the car or dripped mustard on a vintage Joe Namath jersey.”

But I think this quote is the most important one.

And that is the best way to run a team.

Make moves in the best interest of your team, not to curry favor with the media or public.

Why would a second round pick need a consultant?

Thornton is reportedly helping Smith find a new agent.

“He wants to be with somebody who’s going to really understand what just happened, and give him a plan off the field to sort of rebuild his reputation that he doesn’t think deserves the hit that it took, but it did,” Thornton told NFL AM recently. “You know, it is what it is, so he has to get with somebody who is not really trying to sell him a bill of goods, but really understand the situation and is ready to take him forward.”

You know what just happened to him? He slipped to the second round, which was probably the appropriate round for him.

You know how he rebuilds his reputation? Work his tail off and become a good NFL quarterback.

Sometimes you get the sense that too many people are whispering in Geno’s ears.

Garrard told Sports Illustrated’s Peter King, who covers the NFL and politics for the magazine, that his bad knee doesn’t have much cartilage left, so there is bone-on-bone friction.

“I couldn’t jog most days,” Garrard told King. “I could barely walk around without it hurting. And we weren’t even in the strenuous part of camp yet. I figured, ‘No way I can just take every fourth day off.’ I went to see Rex [Ryan], and I just told him I didn’t think I could do it. He didn’t want to hear it. But I just told him what the doctor said — it’s only going to get worse. And that was it.”

There have been published reports claiming he made the move because he slipped to the second round of the draft. Smith claims that is inaccurate.

“From the standpoint I switched agents because I fell in the draft, I’m not naïve,” Smith told SiriusXM NFL Radio. “I understand an agent can’t get you selected higher or lower. It’s based on team needs and the decisions that are made in the front office.”

While he dismisses that angle, he refuses to explain the real reason he purged his first agents.

When does he think he will have new representation in place?

“I did some interviews with some really good candidates, and I started making that decision in my head.” Smith told SiriusXM NFL Radio. “I obviously had camp, so I really didn’t worry about it. I have plenty of time. I don’t need to rush it. I have been talking things over with my family and my advisors and I will come up with a decision pretty close here.”
