Jenkins should wait

There is talk that Kris Jenkins might participate in the upcoming minicamp. That would be a mistake unless he’s met his goal of losing 30 pounds. There is no way the Jets should let him run around on his two surgical knees unless he’s 360 or less. His knees are better off with a lighter body.

Kenwin Cummings stepping up

Rex Ryan on linebacker Kevin Cummings – “[He] has actually put on weight, but he looks quicker. And obviously being in our defensive system another year, he looks like he’s a different guy. He’s moving in space well. He’s physical. He’s tough and he can really strike you. Now, the way he’s moving in the open field has been really impressive.”

Jets moving on from Clint Stitser

Rex Ryan said on Thursday that the Jets will be moving on from backup placekicker Clint Stitser, who was 0-3 on field goals at practice. The Jets will likely bring in another camp leg to backup Nick Folk, who will be the Jets kicker unless he has a bad summer.

Keep an eye on Larry Taylor

Here is a sleeper for you – Larry Taylor. He looked good returning kicks in the OTA’s. The 5-6, 177-pound former CFL standout has outstanding speed and quickness and is tough to bring down because of his low center of gravity. He’s reminds me a little of Darren Sproles. The UConn-product played the last two years for Montreal and was named the CFL’s Top Special Teams Player last season.

Revis situation a tough one

It’s hard to see the Jets giving Revis a $16-17 million deal right now. It’s a bad economy, ticket sales are poor and the CBA is a mess. Look around the league – lot of angry players being forced to play on one-year tenders. Teams aren’t spending. Perhaps the Jets could move some of the back-end money in Revis’ contract up to this year to placate him, and try to avoid a long-term deal in 2010.

First Pettine, now Thurman trashes Rhodes

Jets secondary coach Dennis Thurman had this to say about former Jets safety Kerry Rhodes in the Wall Street Journal – “Realistically, the design didn’t materialize last year because [Rhodes] didn’t learn the defense the way he should have. He wanted to be the guy who wanted to make the changes, make the checks and he didn’t know the defense.”

Tough spot for Kellen Clemens

Whether you like Kellen Clemens as a QB or not, it’s hard to dislike the human being. He’s a class act. So you have to feel bad for him right now. It’s like he’s on NFL death row. He’s working hard this off-season, but could be dropped at any time for Mark Brunell, once the Jets lose a free agent. Watching him in the locker room, he doesn’t seem very happy, but he’s too good a guy to say anything.

Dan’s OTA observations

True the kicking wasn’t great in Thursday’s practice, but I thought the disrespect shown to the kickers was inappropriate.

Sanchez observation

Watching Mark Sanchez, and his surgical knee at practice on Thursday, the thing that caught my eye was his ability to cut and change directions. I saw him cut and pivot several times with ease. Usually after knee surgeries, running straight is the first thing you can do, and changing directions comes later. He seemed to cut pretty smoothly.

Cromartie a natural kick returner

Antonio Cromartie on returning kicks – “I like it. I’ve been doing it since high school. To me, I think it just comes natural. I’m looking forward to it. I’m trying to do whatever I can to help out as much as possible. I ran track in college, so I go back to track form when I get in the open field. I know how to use my speed, slow it down and when to accelerate.”
