Shaun Ellis upgraded

Florham – At his Friday press conference, Rex Ryan announced that defensive end Shaun Ellis (back) is doubtful.

But the Jets have decided to upgrade him to questionable.

He’s still not a lock to play.

Remember, he also has a little bit of a knee issue, so why play him in a meaningless game? The Jets really need him to be at his best in the playoffs.

Ellis, Smith doubtful

Florham Park – The Jets will be without DE Shaun Ellis (back) and S Eric Smith (concussion) for their game on Sunday against Buffalo.

They will join OT Damien Woody (knee) and James “Dig” Ihedigbo (knee, ankle) on the sidelines.

Jets fined $100,000 by NFL

The New York Jets were notified today that the club has been fined $100,000 by Commissioner Roger Goodell for violating league rules in the recent incident involving Jets assistant coach Sal Alosi, who placed players in a prohibited area on the sideline to impede an opposing team’s special teams players and gain a competitive advantage. This is both a competitive violation as well as a dangerous tactic. The discipline imposed on the club also includes the response to the incident of coach Alosi and special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff, who made public comments accusing other teams of employing similar tactics. Both the NFL Constitution and Bylaws and other league policies require clubs to report actual or suspected violations of competitive rules by other teams only to the league office and not to engage in public criticism of other clubs. The fine has been imposed on the Jets to emphasize that clubs are accountable for the actions of their employees and have the obligation to ensure that all members of their organization comply with league rules.

Premium – A intriquing look at the DB’s

Florham Park – You could tell this might not be a great day for the secondary, when their best player for beat for a gain of 14 on the Chicago Bears first pass attempt.

Westhoff on Trufant

Isaiah Trufant could be a player who helps the Jets in the playoffs.

“Defensively, they want to see how he fits into certain coverage roles because he’s looked good in practice,” Mike Westhoff said. “He has incredible speed.”

He could help the Jets in the nickel situation.

Big game for Trufant

The Jets game against Buffalo isn’t really a big game for Gang Green.

But it is for Isaiah Trufant, a cornerback just called up from the practice squad.

“Can he help us in the playoffs, that is what we want to find out,” Rex Ryan said on Thursday.

Trufant was a star in the UFL this past season. He has tremendous speed and quickness, and could help in the slot.

So what will Jets do with roster spot?

Florham Park – The Jets waived defensive end Matt Kroul on Tuesday. He is now on the practice squad.

So what are they going to do with the roster spot?

I think they are going to promote CB Isaiah Trufant from the practice squad. With their nickel back issues, they might need him in the playoffs, so in Week 17, in a meaningless game, it’s a good time to find out what he can do.

Bills kinda banged-up

The following Bills didn’t practice on Wednesday – T Demetrius Bell (knee), S Jon Corto (illness), QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (knee), G Cord Howard (shoulder), WR Donald Jones (head), LB Chris Kelsay (knee), CB Terrence McGee (head), WR David Nelson (ribs), DT Torell Troup (back), DT Kyle Williams (hip).

Rex gets more hands-on with defense

Coming off a shaky month of defense, Rex Ryan got more involved in the defensive meetings on Wednesday.
“They could tell I was itching to go, so they let me run the base defense,” Ryan said.  “I just wanted to get back (to my roots) a little bit.”
Rex wanted to stress what his defensive culture is all about.
“This is what we do,” Ryan said. ”This is how we expect it to be played.  (We) almost went back to minicamp-type things.  I want them to understand the importance of what we’re talking about.  These are things that we’ve talked about since Day One since we’ve been here.”
So what kind of things did he reiterate?
“They had to listen to me for an hour going over base calls that they know,” Ryan said.  “This is one of our staples.  This is how we play base (defense) and we have to get back to it.”
And they also might need to tweak some personnel, but it’s a longshot they do that.
