The Jets are about to hire Karl Dunbar as their defensive line coach. The announcement was made by Manish Mehta, who has broken a number a stories involving the Jets coaching staff in recent weeks.
“The Daily News has learned that the Jets have offered Karl Dunbar their defensive line coach position,” wrote Mehta. “Barring an eleventh-hour change of heart, it is believed that Dunbar, who spent six seasons as the defensive line coach for the Vikings before he was fired earlier this month, will join Rex Ryan’s staff. The Jets targeted Dunbar shortly after he and the Vikings parted ways, bringing him to the team facility in Florham Park, New Jersey, for an interview two weeks ago.”
Rex Ryan during an interview with ESPN’s Bob Holtzman, at the Pro Bowl, was asked about his quarterback.
“He’s a great quarterback,” Ryan said of Mark Sanchez.
Not just good, but great.
Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin announced the hiring of two coordinators on Friday.
“I’m excited that Mike Sherman and Kevin Coyle have decided to accept the positions of Offensive and Defensive Coordinator of the Miami Dolphins, respectively,” Philbin said. “They are exactly what I am looking for in terms of leadership, character, and teaching ability. They are both very passionate about the game of football and the players they coach, and that enthusiasm is evident in the meetings rooms and on the field. They are excellent family men and I’m thrilled they are joining the Dolphins’ football family. I can’t wait to get started to work with them.”
Roger Goodell told CBS this week – “People want to feel part of a group, feel like they’re connected, and right now during these difficult times, they can turn on free television and watch the greatest entertainment that’s out there. They can forget their worries for just a few hours.
“Our biggest challenge going forward is how do we get people to come to our stadiums because the experience is so great at home. When you turn on (a football game), you want to see a full stadium.”
In the current issue of Jets Confidential (pictured above), I wrote, “the Jets need to stop forcing Rex to be P.T. Barnum.”
And since the issue has come out, the more I’m hearing, the more I believe this.
From what I hear, over his first three years with the Jets, Ryan has had to serve two masters – both the football and marketing departments.
It seems like the Jets brass want him to win football games, and also sell tickets with his bombastic style, which manifests itself in wild proclamations that grab headlines.
This needs to stop.
The Jets need to let Ryan, a talented football coach, just focus on football, and stop putting him out there as marketing tool.

A couple of weeks ago, Jets VP Matt Higgins announced he was leaving the organization. This came as a surprise. What might have happened?

Nobody wanted to deal with Santonio Holmes, who was the root of the problem.
He’s very difficult to reason with.
So Rex and others were kicking the can.
Former Jets LB Marvin Jones is part of a group of former NFL players suing the league over how concussions were treated.
A league lawyer claims this case has no business being in court.
“You don’t get to come to court,” NFL lawyer Beth Wilkinson said. “They should go through the process that’s laid out in the (CBA) agreement.”
21 player lawsuits have been filed in six states.
The players involved in these suits include Jones, Tony Dorsett, Ottis Anderson, Mark Duper and Jim McMahon.
Some of these players are dealing with medical issues they feel are related to multiple concussions.
Antonio Cromartie told Eric Allen of newyorkjets.com, “we have to take a hold of our locker room.”
And a big part of Rex Ryan getting that done, is putting an end to unnamed Jets making negative comments about teammates.
We will see if Ryan can get this done.
