The answer to this question simple. It really is. There really isn’t a lot of room for debate. People can pretend there is, but it’s hard to see where they are coming form at this point.
I understand that nobody is going to want to talk about it now at One Jets Drive, but if Mike Vick continues playing the way he did in his first two starts, he should be the Jets’ starter next year.
Where else are they going to turn?
It’s hard to fathom them going back to Geno Smith as their #1 QB, especially to start next season.
Matt Simms is a heck of a guy, but the media has embellished his viability. The media loves him. You should see how often writers go over to schmooze (to borrow a favorite word of Steve Somers).
And the Jets can’t draft a QB in the first couple of rounds and hand him the car keys. I’m not saying they can’t pick QB high, but this will be the fourth year the Jets are out of the playoffs. 2015 can’t be a year written off to develop a rookie quarterback. No way.
So if Vick continues doing what he’s doing, he will likely be the guy next year.
Vick would like that.
“I like it here, but that’s not my decision to make,” Vick said.
And it’s too early to make that decision. Vick needs to stay healthy and continue to play like he did the last two games, for the rest of the season.
“I like it here in New York, it’s been great, but I can’t predetermine or make a decision on what’s going to happen,” Vick said. “Because the minute you start setting your sights out on something, or you want something to much, then if it doesn’t happen for you then it’s a big disappointment. So, I just like to go with the flow, whatever happens, then the decisions will be made at the appropriate time.”
Yes it will. And right now, Vick is clearly the leading candidate to be the team’s 2015 starter. But a lot can happen between now and then.
Another huge factor to consider here is Percy Harvin.
I like to call Vick – “The Harvin Whisperer.”
Harvin can be bad news if not handled just right. He has some anger management issues.
Vick and Harvin are from the same area. Harvin looks up to Vick. The Jets’ QB is an awesome influence on the guy.
Remember when the Jets removed Jerricho Cotchery from the receiver room, and things went haywire in there.
Taking Vick out of the Jets equation could hurt the Jets on the Harvin front.
Vick is a calming influence on Percy.
I think taking Vick out of the building, would have a bad impact on Harvin, who is powder keg if not handled with kid gloves.
So if Vick continues doing what he’s doing, it’s a no-brainer that he should be the Jets’ QB in 2015.
