Florham Park – A lot of action today in Florham Park, including two misleading picks and a quarterback addition that really has nothing to do with the quarterback who was cut . . .
Sometimes context is needed on plays.
It’s not always what it seems.
There were two picks late in practice today.
I’m sure some of you read about them on Twitter. They happened very close together.
Darrelle Revis had a pick around the goal-line on a deep ball to Walter Powell.
I was standing very close to the play.
Powell actually had a few steps on Revis, but Matt Flynn badly under-threw him.
It was like fielding a punt for Revis.
Look, I think Revis is a great player, but this wasn’t a very difficult play due to how poorly the ball was thrown.
Then Quinton Coples had a pick.
Now this was newsworthy since he was beat for that long gain on a short pass in the left flat to Atlanta’s Collin Mooney last Friday. So people are keeping a closer eye on his coverage this week.
Honestly, his coverage skills had nothing to do with this pick.
Jake Heaps had a pass tipped at the line, the ball went high in the air, and went right into Coples area, and he caught it. It wasn’t a coverage play.
Just wanted to add perspective to these plays. Things aren’t always what they seem, especially when you don’t witness them yourself . . .
While I do think QB arm strength can be overrated, as you saw above, and on a few other passes today, it was clear, Flynn doesn’t have a great arm.
I understand he’s a little rusty, but Flynn didn’t look very good today, and I think it was his play that led to the signing of Josh Johnson this evening.
Yes, they released Jake Heaps to make room for Johnson, but this isn’t about Heaps, this is about finding a reliable veteran backup, something Heaps wasn’t going to be, as a rookie free agent.
I saw Johnson play for the Bengals in a preseason game this summer, and I have to say, I thought he looked pretty good . . .
Jace Amaro (shoulder) was riding a stationary bike today during practice.
That isn’t big news.
But something else I noticed while he was riding the bike is a little newsworthy.
The bikes the Jets have on the practice field are the kind where you not only pedal with your feet, but you also work your arms.as the handle bars move back and forth, kind of like the elliptical machine concept.
While other players worked their legs and arms, Amaro just did the leg part, so clearly his shoulder wasn’t up to doing the upper body aspect of this workout machine.
You get the sense this could be a while . . .
Marcus Gilchrist is a very good traffic cop for the Jets re-worked secondary, which is trying to get on the same page. He’s very smart and an excellent communicator . . .
Speaking of communication, with the backup secondary in, Jeff Cumberland was wide open on a crossing route, Nobody was near him.
Marcus Williams, who is having a very good camp, took responsibility for the blown assignment . . .
Ryan Fitzpatrick seems so, so comfortable in Chan Gailey’s offense, which he was in for three years in Buffalo. In camp, he’s been very decisive, making quick decisions, and is completing a lot of passes.
I’m not putting him in Canton, but for what the Jets need this year, a game-manager, to compliment their running game and defense, he could be perfect . .
