New Jersey – Todd Bowles is in a tough spot. He’s got to make the best of a situation that wasn’t of his doing. There isn’t much he can say . . .
You have to feel a little bad for Todd Bowles. He has to sit up there at these press conferences and has to constantly defend Darrelle Revis, a player he had nothing to do with signing.
A lot of questions today.
Q)Are you he is confident that if asked, Darrelle Revis can cover Landry one-on-one?
Bowles: If asked to do it, we’re confident that he can cover anybody.
Q)Do you remain confident with Revis?
Bowles Your kids also breaks things and you don’t lose faith in them either. You’ve seen a guy practice. You know what he is. Everybody that goes 16 games in this league are not going to play 16 great games. You dust it off. You have short memory as a corner. You come back and play.
Q)Do you think Revis is on the decline?
Bowles: Because he’s older, I’m sure he’s probably—where he lacked physically, he’s gotten smarter mentally. He’s still a good football player.
It went on for a little longer – several more questions.
Man, do I hate covering this story. A once great player, on a major decline and grossly overpaid.
The guy that probably needs to get in front of the cameras and talk about this is the team’s owner.
He was a driving force behind the move, not Bowles.
What an unfortunate situation all around. The only winner in all this is Revis’ bank account. Aside from that, it’s all bad . . .
Jalin Marshall has been a little shaky as a returner in recent weeks – a little indecisive.
So it should come as no surprise that newly-acquired C.J. Spiller was getting a lot of work as kick returner at Jets practice today.
Nick Marshall was also getting work.
The Jets made news earlier this week when they claimed Knile Davis off waivers from Green Bay, but then shortly thereafter they waived Davis and signed Spiller.
Spiller had been balking at the money they were offering, but once the team claimed Davis, perhaps he saw an opportunity falling by the wayside, and he agreed to terms.
The move to bring in Spiller instead of Davis makes sense.
It’s hard to incomporate new players into an offense in mid-season from a playbook-standpoint, and Spiller is very familiar with Chan Gailey’s system from their time together in Buffalo. Plus, Spiller played with Ryan Fitzpatrick in Buffalo, so there is a familiarity there.
So moving Spiller in for Davis makes sense.
The only negative is that Davis is a 230-pound power back who could have helped the Jets in short yardage and goalline. They really don’t have a guy like that. Spiller is a 200-pound third-down back.
But considering how much the Jets like to throw to the backs, Spiller should come in handy.
And he could help them as a kick returner. He has 4.4 speed.
