New Jersey – As per usual, there is a lot going on around Jets camp. We get into the Jason Smith trade, and some other matters, in today’s dose of Website Whispers . . .
While Kenrick Ellis had a terrific game against Carolina, he still needs some work on his run defense.
On the first series, on a Jonathan Stewart five-yard run up the middle, Ellis got turned around by the blocker, and his back ended up facing the runner. This is something he needs to work on.
He bounced back on the next play, and stopped Stewart for a loss of one.
Overall, Ellis got the best of Panthers center Ryan Kalil. Ellis (346) used his 51 pound weight advantage over Kalil (295) to push the USC product around . . .
Sometimes the Jets don’t like to deal with reality regarding high draft picks, and let PR cloud reality. They can talk up Kyle Wilson all they want, but he needs to be more consistent.
On the Panthers’ first series, on third-and-three, WR Brandon LaFell caught a six-yard crossing route against him.
Then, on the last play of the first quarter, LaFell caught a 22-yard pass, on the deep right side, cutting away from Wilson with ease.
The Jets have one of the best starting cornerback tandems in the league in Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie.
But if Wilson doesn’t start playing better, opponents are just going to stay away from Revis and Cro, and go at Wilson . . .
Austin Howard did play well against Carolina, but he did get some help. There was a lot of chipping going on.
On the Jets’ first offensive play, a 24-yard pass to Dustin Keller on right side, John Connor helped out on the right side, and this helped give Sanchez the extra time needed to complete this pass.
But while he did get some help at times, Howard still deserves credit for his effort against Carolina, against a very good pass rusher – Charles Johnson. One thing about Howard, he gives you everything he has . . .
As for the Jets’ trade for Jason Smith, this isn’t that big of a deal. The Jets are taking a flyer on a player who was a bust in St. Louis. A couple of years ago he got beat out for the left tackle job by Rodger Saffold, and then this summer, he was beat out by journeyman Barry Richardson for the right tackle position.
This is just a kick the tires move. Personally, I don’t think Smith has ever been the same since suffering a very severe concussion as a rookie. It was a real bad one . . .
There are people that just continue to push this angle that the Jets need a receiver, and won’t back off of it.
The Daily News created a story today by saying the Jets aren’t interested in Terrell Owens. They got a lot of links out of that story on other websites. How is this story?
They think the Jets need a receiver, as does Gregg Rosenthal, of NFL.com.
“It’s hard to imagine another team giving T.O. a shot, but the New York Jets are one of the few that, in theory, have a huge receiver need,” Rosenthal wrote today.
The Jets top four receiving spots are set with Santonio Holmes, Stephen Hill, Jeremy Kerley and Patrick Turner. The Jets also have upstart Jordan White, along with Chaz Schilens and Eron Riley vying for the fifth spot.
Holmes and Hill had drops last night, but that doesn’t change their status. Hill did have five catches, and drew an interference call.
Explain this huge need, especially since the Jets are going to also throw to tight ends Dustin Keller and Jeff Cumberland a ton.
Stop creating the news guys . . .
So many people think they are coming to the big city when they sign with the Jets, but they actually train in the country. I saw this goat on a farm minutes from Jets camp.
