In this version of Dan’s Weekend Website Whispers, we have a couple of notes dealing with Darrelle Revis and Jets’ tickets . . .
The Newark Star-Ledger’s Jenny Vrentas sat down with Darrelle Revis for a one-on-one at Jets’ camp on Thursday.
My head is spinning after reading the bevy of Revis’ quotes in that story.
He is trying to do this vague balancing act where he doesn’t come across as the bad guy, but gets his message across.
“I want to be here and never play for another organization again. If they feel that, if Mike feels that I’m that type of person to be here, then they will compensate me. If not, then it’s the business of it.”
He is being compensated – a $13 million average including this season.
“If Mike and them want to move on it, it’s really on them, on what they want to do. And then we’ll go from there. We’ll negotiate it out if that’s the case, and if not, then it’s not.”
If anybody knows what the heck that means, please feel free to explain it to us. It’s mumbo-jumbo.
And then there’s this – “I could come here every day and make a hassle, ‘I want to get paid,’ but if they don’t want to do that — if Mike doesn’t want to do that — then they don’t want to do that. It might be that way. It might be they want to do it, but they’ve got to figure out the best situation to get it done.”
Once again, it’s very hard to understand what he’s talking about. I don’t even know if I would have run the quote. What does it mean?
One last one – “I never came out and said, ‘I demand a new contract.’ I know what situation I’m in. I’ve got two years left on this deal, and when the time comes for Mike and Mr. Johnson and my representatives to talk and hash it out and figure out what is best for this organization or what’s best for me, then we’ll move forward.”
Okay, you get the point – it’s a bunch of gobbly gook.
Here is my issue with Revis -If you want a new contract, just come out and say it. Stop with the vague rhetoric, where you are pretending to take the high road, because he really isn’t, But he wants you to think he is.
This article gave me a headache. His quotes totally lacked clarity.
The guy is a tremendous football player, who will likely be in Canton (above) one day, but it’s hard to give him high marks for his handling of this matter . . .
In the next issue of Jets Confidential, Peter Schwartz is examining the Jets’ current ticket situation.
What we are getting from a Jet official is that they will be sold out.
That is what Woody Johnson said last Thursday. He guaranteed the Jets will be sold out by opening day.
How do they know this? Can they see the future? There is a lot of inventory right now. Are they attempting to will this into happening?
This was the same position Matt Higgins took last year, and even though he’s not there anymore, they are using his strategy.
It’s the company line, and they are sticking to it.
But the bottom line is this – CBS and the Jets will never allow the Jets to be blacked out. They will buy up tickets. The Jets, with the bombastic Rex Ryan, and a bunch of sexy story lines, are money in the bank when it comes to ratings.
