Trade possibility . . .
The Los Angeles Chargers lost Pro Bowl center Mike Pouncey to a season-ending neck injury.
Joe Douglas needs to pick up the phone and see what the Chargers are willing to offer for center Ryan Kalil.
Kalil would love it. He’s from Southern California, and has a wife and two kids back there.
Jason La Canfora of CBS announced earlier this week that Jets GM Joe Douglas will be looking to trade commodities leading up to the NFL trade deadline. La Canfora, is based on the D.C., and Douglas worked in Baltimore for 16 years, so there is likely a relationship there.
“Under former management, the Jets were one of the NFL’s heaviest-spending teams back in the spring during free agency. Now, new management is willing to move on from several high-priced players ahead of the trade deadline, league sources said,” wrote La Canfora. “Rookie general manager Joe Douglas is in a difficult spot, with the Jets off to an 0-3 start amid renewed expectations, taking over the job late in the off-season when it was almost impossible to make real changes, and then watching starting quarterback Sam Darnold, who remains out Sunday, miss over a month with mono. Douglas is trying to turn the perpetually middling club into a long-term winner and, sources said, is willing to get creative to do it.”
They way La Canfora made Douglas into a sympathetic figure here, you can tell there is a relationship there.
If the Chargers aren’t interested, maybe the Rams would be. They are starting a center right now who is more of a backup and very undersized (Brian Allen).
Kalil is a tradeable commodity as are Leonard Williams, Kelechi Osemele (if he’s healthy) and Trumaine Johnson.
Johnson might be tough due to the largesse of his contract, but maybe Douglas and the Jets’ cap guy can figure out a creative way to make a trade where the Jets’ cap hit is lessened by working with the suitor. SO many teams need corners . . .
People are going to make a big deal today about how Chris Herndon hurt his hamstring and “whoa is the Jets” with another injury.
Talk to the Los Angeles Chargers and several other teams that are ravaged by injuries. The NFL has a 100 percent injury rate. Every player has something wrong with them, and myriad teams have tons of injuries.
The Giants have ruled out RB Saquon Barkley (ankle), TE Evan Engram (knee), WR Sterling Shepherd (concussion) and Wayne Gallman (concussion) against the New England Patriots.
Four key offensive players right there.
So it’s hard to act like the Jets are more snake-bitten with injuries than other teams. Maybe a few, but they have plenty of company.
What would have helped the Jets during the Herndon suspension and now his hamstring injury, was having an athletic, mobile tight end with a similar skill set to fill in for him, not a blocking tight end like Ryan Griffin.
Daniel Brown could have helped the Jets at the tight end position in the passing game, but they haven’t thrown to him.
