Florham Park – A lot of action today in Florham Park at Jets camp. Let’s take a look at some of what went on at ONe Jets Drive . . .
You get the sense that Jets offensive Chan Gailey really likes Jeff Cumberland.
He’s been really involved in the passing offense the first couple of days, including a number of shots down field.
Cumberland is an unusual talent. For as big as he is (6-4, 260), he also has 4.5 speed, which makes him a threat down the seam . . .
The battle for the right guard spot right now is between Brian Winters and sleeper Brent Qvale. The tie-breaking factor here could who deals better with the blitz. Winters and then Oday Aboushi, who both started at guard for the Jets the last two years, are both tough guys who get push in the running game, but at times were late to recognize and adjusts to blitzes. They both need to do a better job on switch-off blocks.
But then again, it’s possible that Willie Colon lands the job when he comes back from a knee ailment . . .
Sheldon Richardson had a couple of plays today where he showed why the team isn’t going to pull the plug on him.
Early in practice, he shot into the backfield, and made Geno Smith roll out of the pocket and throw the ball away. Shortly thereafter he shot by OT Ben Ijalana to cause more disruption. His quickness into gaps is rare.
Aside from being a very talented player, another reason the Jets won’t bail on Richardson is that he’s well-liked in the building. People really like the guy.
“It’s hard to say a guy’s a good guy when two things like this happen, but he’s a good guy,” Todd Bowles said. “But good guys don’t always do the right thing.” . . .
Brandon Marshall is a rare talent. The only reason he’s bounced around the league so much (Jets are his fourth team) have been off-the-field concerns. It’s certainly not talented related.
And you could see his rare talent on display today at Jets practice.
I’m sure many of you have already heard about his one-handed catch on the left side of the end zone on a fade route from Geno Smith.
Now he didn’t get two feet in bounds, but you could still see his awesome skillset on display.
Later in practice, CB Marcus Williams was in tight coverage on Marshall on a crossing route, and got his hand on the ball, but the wide receiver with his big, strong, confident hands snatched it away to make the grab.
Marshall is going to help Geno Smith a great deal. You don’t need pinpoint accuracy to have success with this guy. Just throw it to an area, and there is a good chance he will come down with it . . .
Jabari Lattimore is a good coverage linebacker. He had an interception on a pass that Geno Smith underthrew to Jeff Cumberland down the deep left side, and had near pick on a deep out to Cumberland, but the ball just slipped by him . . .
