Time for a heaping helping of Monday Jets Whispers . . .
The Jets are still in the wild-card race. What does Josh McCown think of that?
“I think it energizes us more than anything,” McCown said. “We look forward to the challenge. First one in the books is Carolina.”
While Carolina is a tough challenge, this is a winnable game for the Jets. The reason I say that is because the Jets’ biggest issue is at cornerback, and the Panthers aren’t a team loaded at wide receiver. They traded Kelvin Benjamin to Buffalo a few weeks ago, and lost receiver Curtis Samuel to an ankle injury in their last game.
I know none of us know what is going to happen in the future, but if the Panther knew they were going to lose Samuel, they never would have traded Benjamin.
Now they are down two guys they were counting on big-time this year.
So looking at the Panthers right now, they aren’t the kind of team that will light up the Jets through the air, even with the Jets’ cornerback issues.
The Jets generally get into trouble when they face a big-time passer with a coterie of weapons. That isn’t the case this week . . .
Nothing like creating the news you cover.
McCown was asked today, “What does it mean to hear Coach Bowles state that he is the quarterback?”
“It’s good, I guess,” McCown said. “We’re both kind of on the same page with that, and there wasn’t a scenario where I saw it either, so I think it’s good to hear it but we were already on the same page, so I don’t know if that was necessarily a new thing.”
McCown is a southern gentleman who always travels on the high road, but you tell in that answer how foolish he believed the question to be.
“It’s good, I guess” could easily have been, from somebody not as spiritual as McCown, “It’s good, I guess, moron.”
In 10 starts, McCown has 14 touchdown passes, a 93.7 QB rating and is competing 69 percent of his passes. So why would there be a question about who the quarterback is going to be?
So essentially, some reporters make up a narrative that it might be time for Christian Hackenberg or Bryce Petty to play, and then when Todd Bowles tells that it’s not happening now, they run to McCown to find out he feels about a vote of confidence he didn’t need.
“It’s good to hear it but we were already on the same page, so I don’t know if that was necessarily a new thing,” McCown said.
This is basically making up news, or others might call it “fake news.”
And McCown was trying to be polite by saying, “We’re (Todd and Josh) both kind of on the same page with that, and there wasn’t a scenario where I saw [a benching] either.”
McCown is one of the true bright spots of the 2017 Jets. He’s stabilized the Jets QB position. QB play is far down on the list of Jets’ issues right now. True, the Tampa Bay game wasn’t one of his best, but the dude got sacked six times and hit 14 times. The offensive line play was terrible.
