Orlando – A heaping helping of Whispers from the NFL Owners Meeting . . .
The Jets did the right thing taking back their offer to Suh.
They already made him the highest offer, and he couldn’t even bother to schedule a visit.
He did visit the Los Angeles Rams where he’s likely going to sign.
The Jets got used by Kirk Cousins and his agent to get the quarterback what he wanted from Minnesota. And they were used, there is no doubt about it. I was told by a league source that that Cousins knew for months he was going to Minnesota.
I’m not criticizing the Jets getting used by Cousins. It wasn’t their fault. They gave it their best shot.
But at least they learned from that and didn’t let themselves get used by Suh, who clearly isn’t that interested in playing for them, but was more than happy to leak to Yahoo Sports that the Jets made the highest offer. He probably leaked that to force the Rams to increase their offer. He’s from Portland. He would prefer to play on the West Coast.
Suh to the Jets didn’t make sense on a number of fronts. Aside from the player not being that into the Jets (as evidenced by not visiting even after getting the best offer from them), he really doesn’t fit into their cultural re-boot. Also, he’s 31. This made little sense on so many levels.
To me, the Jets paying him a lot of money, would have been like when the Buffalo Bills blew away Mario Williams with a huge offer, that he took, but truly never wanted to be there.
Money can’t buy you love in free agency.
Jets did the right thing pulling the plug . . .
I was talking to a former long-time NFL QB, now in the media, who doesn’t think the Jets should pick Josh Rosen.
The reason is related to durability.
Rosen is a little on the skinny side and he’s not mobile. That is a bad combination, and he did get hurt a few times in college.
But the biggest potential issue is this, according to the former NFL QB.
“Josh’s father is a spinal surgeon,” said the former QB. “He’s already had a concussion. Don’t you think if he gets one or two more his father is going to tell him to quit.”
Perhaps.
But just overall, the durability concern with Rosen, has to be evaluated to the nth degree by the Jets.
But the way, interested note on Dr. Charles Rosen – he was almost named Surgeon General of the United States under President Barack Obama . . .
Patriots owner Robert Kraft, an industrialist worth around $6 billion, is a very successful man who operates numerous companies.
On Monday in Orlando, he was asked about Bill Belichick’s controversial decision to bench starting CB Malcolm Butler in the Super Bowl, which certainly contributed to the Eagles putting up 41 point in that game, with a backup QB under center.
And his answer was eclectic, to say the least, mixing his two worlds – corporate America and the NFL.
“We in New England are privileged to have arguably the great coach in the history of coaching,” Kraft said. “We are involved in a number of businesses in our family. We are in 95 countries in the world. We try to encourage to have good managers. We want them to take risks and sometimes they work out and sometimes they don’t. As someone who is privileged to be the owner of this team, I encourage him to keep going with instincts and doing what he thinks is right. There is no doubt in my mind, that even if he made an error, and this is true with any of our managers, if you are doing it for the right reason, I support it 100 percent.”
Interesting take.
