Some stuff on a variety of Jets players today . . .
Somebody asked Pierre Desir today during a conference call about being the Jets #1 CB for now.
He’s not a #1 cornerback, he’s a #2, and if people expect him to be a #1, they aren’t being fair to him.
The Jets still must find a #1 corner.
I asked Desir what his theory was on my his career has taken him to so many different teams. The Jets are his fourth team in his seventh season.
“Some times things don’t work out, but God has a plan,” said Desir.
One of the issues has been health. In his six seasons, he’s only played one complete season, which was in 2018. He also battled injuries in college.
But teams keep signing him because he has good instincts and ball skills.
If he can finally buck his rough injury history, like Marcus Maye did for the Jets last year, he should be able to help them a great deal on defense.
However, the last thing he needs is the pressure of being called a “#1” cornerback. He’s really not, but a very good #2.
“My ceiling is very high and I will continue to get better,” said Desir . . .
The Jets re-signed guard Alex Lewis this off-season, a player they acquired in a trade last summer from Baltimore. He had neck and shoulder issues his last couple of years in Baltimore, and that perhaps contributed to the Ravens’ decision to trade him. He stayed healthy most of the season with the Jets, before being sidelined by a late-season ankle issue.
I asked him today about how he’s feeling.
“I am very blessed right now to have overall health,” Lewis said. “Body is feeling great and shoulder is feeling great.”
Joe Douglas is a big fan of Lewis’ toughness. He plays with an attitude. You can almost see it on his face in the picture above . . .
Also speaking today was new Jets center Connor McGovern. He was asked about what attracted him to the Jets, and this one sentence kind speaks volumes.
“Now with the conference being shook up, there is a real opportunity to win a lot of football games,” McGovern said.
Not sure if he meant “division” or “conference” but the fact that Tom Brady is now longer in New England is SUCH a game-changer for Gang Green and all the other teams in the division, and the conference as well.
The Patriots, with Brady at quarterback, won the AFC East the last 10 years in a row, From conference standpoint, he went to nine Super Bowl, and won six, so it does impact the conference. That is nine Super Bowl appearances from the AFC by Brady’s Patriots in 20 years. So other teams only represented the AFC in the Super Bowl 11 times during Brady’s time in New England. That is crazy in a league set-up for parity.
The Jets have a real chance to finally make a big statement with perhaps the best QB of all time out of the division, and conference, and players like McGovern know it . . .
While some people were writing him off, Brian Winters is still very much in the picture at right guard for the Jets. He will battle Greg Van Roten for the job.
Winters is a Douglas kind of player -a brawler, who will play hurt, and is a good culture guy.
