This was a terrific waiver claim by Jets GM Joe Douglas:
Talking about WR Braxton Berrios, claimed off waivers from New England before last season, who had a tremendous practice today, catching everything in sight. He runs great routes and has soft hands. Jets corners had issues with his short-area quickness, as he cut away on several routes with ease.
Not only is he going to be the Jets’ punt returner, but expect him to to have a role in their passing offense.
With the Jets receiver injuries, he is quite an asset for them right now, and he’s taking advantage of the extra practice reps he’s getting in a big way . . .
There was a long TD run today by rookie RB La’Mical Perrine, which was one highlight of the Jets’ practice. He looks like he’s going to be a very good back for the Jets, not just as a runner, but as a receiver (very soft hands).
But the thing about big plays in a football practice, is there’s a flip side; it’s also a bad play. Why? Because if the offense makes a big play, the defense had an issue on the same play, and vice versa.
On this long run, defensive linemen Foley Fatukasi and Henry Anderson were both taken to the ground. It’s never a good thing when defensive linemen are on the ground.
RT Chuma Edoga was very involved in the collapsing of the right side of the line on this play . . .
WR Jehu Chesson had a nice catch on a crossing route against CB Nate Hairston, who needs to be less of a see-and-go reactor, and anticipate a little better . . .
One reason why DE Bryce Huff went undrafted is he never had a chance to run for scouts. The former Memphis Tiger wasn’t invited to the Combine, and his Pro Day was cancelled. To this day, I don’t think there’s a 40 time on him.
But we saw something today that showed that he has really good wheels for a defensive end. As Sam Darnold rolled right, Huff showed great speed, a great burst, chasing him to the right sideline on out of bounds.
Jets need more speed at end, and Huff, who the Jets clearly viewed as their top priority undrafted free agent, giving him a $90,000 in guaranteed money, the most of any of their UDFA’s, can help upgrade their mobility at DE . . .
With Vyncint Smith out for a while after sports hernia surgery, Josh Malone is emerging as a leading candidate for kick returner. He’s a long-strider at 6-3 with 4.4 speed, similar numbers to Smith . . .
Darnold threw a pick today to safety Ashtyn Davis on the short left side. While Davis is clearly a talented player, the big problem with this scenario is when you telegraph a pass to the degree that a rookie safety, in his first camp, is jumping the route, that’s an issue . . .
You saw a lot of practice QB stats today in the media. That’s Kabuki Theatre. How can you do QB stats when there is no tackling and sacks of the QB? . . .
WR Chris Hogan is living up to his nickname – “7/11.” He was given that nickname early in his career because somebody claimed, “He’s always open.”
He great routes and gets open with regularity . . .
The Jet had referees at practice for the first time today because it was “kind of” a scrimmage. I say “kind of,” because the coaches still don’t want defenders tackling offensive player to the ground, so it’s not a real football scrimmage.
One penalty of note was an illegal man down the field penalty on a screen pass.
This is an example of an offense, with so many new parts, attempting to get on the same page on a screen pass, a play that has a lot of moving parts.
