Tons of notes and observations from Tuesday’s minicamp practice . . .
Based on the order they were fielding punts, Quadree Henderson was the Jets’ #1 punt returner today.
He is a former Pitt Panther who was with the New York Giants last year . . .
There is an old saying I’ve heard around the NFL forever – “The more you can do.”
And that certainly applies to Ty Montgomery. He’s the epitome of a jack of all trades, lining up as receiver, running back, as a blocking fullback, a returner, and on top of all that, Le’Veon Bell said today that Montgomery helped him learn the offense while he was away.
This was as smart signing by Mr. Coffee before his departure . . .
You get the sense that Adam Gase is a big fan of tight end Chris Herndon.
Not only is he a very talented tight end who runs good routes and basically catches everything you throw to him, he’s extremely bright.
He picked things up fast as a rookie, and seems to be doing the same with Gase.
Expect Gase to make Herndon a focal point in his offense, and move him around a lot, like a chess piece, creating mismatches . . .
Rookie safety John Battle didn’t practice today. Saw a trainer taping up one of his knees. Battle is an undrafted free agent safety from LSU who certainly has enough talent to challenge for a roster spot.
Speaking of rookie free agent defensive backs from South Florida, former Akron Zip cornerback Kyron Brown flashed in today’s practice. He had an impressive pick where he showed good instincts jumping a route . . .
Second-year cornerback Parry Nickerson seems to be struggling a little. Today, he was often too late arriving to the scene. Perhaps having to learn his second NFL defensive playbook in two years has him swimming out there a little . . .
Quinnen Williams practiced very little today as the Jets take it slow with his calf injury, but in his brief action, he blew by an interior lineman (didn’t catch the license plate number) and got into the quarterback’s face . . .
Former Chicago Bear tight end Daniel Brown, a kind of under-the-radar signing this off-season, looked really good today. The former James Madison wide receiver, who was moved to tight end in training camp with Baltimore, runs really well and has a knack for getting open. He’s one of the reasons Jordan Leggett was expendable. Don’t sleep on this guy . . .
Trevor Siemian has outplayed Sam Darnold in the spring.
I’m not saying there is a QB controversy or even a competition, just telling you what’s going on.
Darnold had a rough practice today. He threw a terrible pick to Jamal Adams in the left front of the end zone on a pass intended for Herndon. He never looked anywhere else – it was telegraph city.
But I’d cut him a ton of slack right now. He’s learning his second offense in two years, which is not ideal for a 21-year-old quarterback (he actually turns 22 tomorrow).
His head is spinning a little right now – three offenses in three years – USC coordinator, Jeremy Bates and now Adam Gase. That isn’t easy.
He should be fine by the opener, but right now, he’s struggling . . .
Le’Veon Bell was finally in town. Darnold threw a quick out to Bell on the left side that was incomplete. Should have been an easy throw and catch. This is why spring practices matters. Good for chemistry and timing.
