Florham Park – Interesting day at Jets camp today. A lot of stuff going on. A lot of practice notes, including one on Tarzan, and a lot of spin. Let’s get things underway . . .
With all the receivers the Jets have in the fold right now, sixth round pick Quincy Enunwa is going to have a hard time making the team.
He had a bad drop early in practice.
Watching him a lot in the spring practices, he seems a little stiff in his movement skills. He doesn’t have loose hops. He’s 6-2, 225 pounds, and to me, he looks like a good candidate to move to tight end . . .
A lot of different Jets officials and coaches were made available to the media today – Woody Johnson, John Idzik, Marty Mornhinweg and David Lee. You don’t get these guys very often.
And there was a ton of spin doctoring going on regarding the quarterback situation.
One of the most bizarre moments, was when Newsday’s Kim Martin asked Mornhinweg about the importance of true competition and putting the best players on the field.
“We are going to put the best player out there for the New York Jets,” said Mornhinweg.
To me, this is a fascinating and revealing answer.
It sounds like, if the New York Jets want to start Geno Smith, for whatever reason or political agenda, they will start him.
You could make the argument that answer eschewed the competition mantra.
And then after giving that statement, his second part of the answer was out of left field.
“Hey, it’s an exciting time for the New York Jets? I’m excited anyway. I’m trying to change the subject.”
To me, it seems like all these offensive coaches, and Rex Ryan, are doing Idzik’s bidding because the GM wants Geno to be the quarterback, come hell or high water.
Hey, we will see how this all works out over the course of the summer, but the spinning that went on today about the quarterback situation, from Johnson, Mornhinweg and Lee, was tough to take at times . . .
Quinton “Tarzan” Coples is looking good and seems poised for a big season.
He did a nice job of dipping his shoulder – displaying solid technique – to get under Breno Giacomini to pressure the QB . . .
Geno Smith had the best throw of the practice today, a rocket down the left seam to Greg Salas (who has looked terrific).
Great throw, great catch . . .
There was this narrative, coming from some, that Vick had a bad practice today. That is unfair.
He had a really bad pass, where he threw way over the head of Enunwa on a crossing route, and it was picked off.
Yes, this was a bad play, but people, it was a two hour practice.
“I thought Michael did fine today,” said Lee. “He had the interception, but other than that, shoot, he played lights out. He threw five touchdown passes.” . . .
The Jets are loaded with tight end talent, including a sleeper who had a standout play in practice – former Furman star Colin Anderson. He caught a short pass on the right side, and turned it into a long gain down the sideline, showing terrific speed.
