Florham Park, New Jersey – Long-time Jets insider Dan Leberfeld checks in from One Jets Drive with a heaping helping of rookie camp Whispers . . .
Tajh Boyd didn’t look very good in today’s mini-camp practice.
His accuracy was a problem, and he was sailing a lot of passes high.
He’s only about 6-0 tall, and it seemed, at times, he was having trouble seeing over his offensive linemen.
Rex was asked today about a position change for Boyd. In all fairness, the question didn’t have anything to do with the practice.
But here is the issue with a position change. This isn’t a college quarterback with great speed like Denard Robinson, who Jacksonville moved to running back. Boyd ran a 4.86. That generally isn’t the type of speed that leads a quarterback to a position change.
The Jets had two quarterbacks at today’s practice – Boyd and tryout B.J. Coleman, who was a seventh round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2012. Coleman looked a lot better than Boyd – more accurate and more decisive.
Coleman also has better size at 6-3, 231 . . .
I was very impressed seeing Jalen Saunders practice for the first time. He SO quick in and out of his breaks. He does such a nice job of sinking his hips when he cuts. He has confident hands. The Jets will be able to use him in so many different ways – punt returns, reverses, at receiver. He’s like a video joystick with his electrifying work in the open field. He’s what is called a “quick twitch” athlete . . .
I feel bad for WR Dwight Jones. Life hasn’t dealt him the best hand in recent years, but I can’t lie – he didn’t look very good today with several drops. If he has another day like this tomorrow, he could be on thin ice . . .
Tight end Jace Amaro looked good today. There is no question he’s a little stiff in the hips when cutting, but he still makes a lot happen.
Another tight end who looked good was Colin Anderson, who was a teammate of Dakota Dozier at Furman. He was in Minnesota Vikings game last summer. He caught the ball nicely today, and has good speed. He got way down field on one reception. He is 6-4, 240 . . .
CB Tevrin Brandon, a tryout from 1-AA Monmouth, had the best play on defense today, a pick way down field.
He ran a 4.34 at Monmouth’s Pro Day.
Nothing against Monmouth, which is a nice 1-AA program, but it’s probably not fair to label this guy a “small college corner.” He was at UConn most of his college career, and transferred to Monmouth to play his last year . . .
Eastern Kentucky offensive offensive tackle Patrick Ford, who was with the Jets on-and-off last year, has been moved to guard . . .
Free agent right tackle Marcus Zusevics, from Iowa, who was on-and-off the Patriots practice squad the last two years, is in camp as a tryout.
He looked pretty good, really getting after it.
Since the Jets released offensive tackle Tevon Conrad (failed physical), Zusevics, could be a possible replacement on the roster. He was a very good Big Ten offensive tackle, whose career was sidetracked a little when he tore pectoral muscle during the 225-lift at the 2012 combine . . .
The Jets claimed speedy back Daryl Richardson off waivers from St. Louis today. He’s similar to Mike Goodson, so if Goodson’s next court date doesn’t go well, Richardson could be a terrific fall-back plan. Also, remember, Goodson is still rehabbing a severe knee injury, so it’s unclear how he will come back from that . . .
