New Jersey – Today we have some Whispers on Doug Marrone to Buffalo, Jets guards and Tom Gamble. Let’s get into it . . .
ESPN’s Rich Cimini tweeted this today – “Possible Doug Marrone-to-Bills impact on #Jets: UFA Brandon Moore a fan of Marrone; his first OL coach.”
Maybe Cimini can broker this deal. He is close with both men. I’m not being flippant. It’s true.
I’m not sure if a lot of you know this – Cimini, a Syracuse graduate, and prominent alum, helped Marrone get the system job.
It will be interesting to see how Cimini covers Jets-Bills games from this point on, with Marrone now Buffalo’s head coach. This could be amazing for him as far as insight on the AFC East.
As for Moore, he turns 33 in June, and has a chronic hip issue, so you wonder what kind of market there will be for him.
While he gets a lot of treatment, the hip issue never seems to keep him out of games, so he should get a gig somewhere, but highly unlikely with the Jets.
They have major cap issues, and were training three young guards this year – Vlad Ducasse, Caleb Schlauderaff and Dennis Landolt, knowing that both of their guards could be goners.
If I were the Jets, I would still try to re-sign Matt Slauson. He won’t cost a lot, and while he will never wow you with the athleticism, he’s a solid pro.
And his bad blood with the organization was mostly with Mike Tannenbaum, for forcing the paycut and the platoon, so now that the GM is out of the picture, Slauson could stay around, if he’s reasonable.
But as for Cimini’s point about Buffalo.
While the Bills have a lot of things to fix, guard isn’t one of them – they love their two guards, Andy Levitre and Kraig Urbik, so Buffalo might not be the landing spot for Moore.
I’d put my money on New England or the Giants.
Belichick loves adding older vets who he can trust, and Moore falls into this category.
The Giants OL was shaky this year, and Moore would love not having to move. He and his family have settled in New Jersey year round . . .
As his been heavily reported, Tom Gamble (pictured above) has emerged as the favorite for the Jets’ GM job.
But then again, Chip Kelly was the favorite for the Browns’ coaching job. How’d that work out?
Gamble clearly wants this job.
He and Rex have a past, he’s from New Jersey, has a lot of family in New Jersey and Pennsylvania (the Jets complex is less than an hour from the PA border), and he has worked for the Jets before.
But while he’s a solid personnel guy, if he’s hired, he will have to hire a talented cap person. According to a league source, he’s not a cap guy.
That’s not a big problem. You can find those guys or gals . . .
If Gamble takes the job, that might not bode well for Braylon Edwards.
Remember, Gamble has spent the last seven years in the 49ers’ personnel department, and the Edwards-San Francisco marriage last year didn’t work out that well.
Edwards didn’t even make it to the playoffs with the team, getting waived on December 27.
So Gamble might not be a fan, though in Edwards’ defense, he was dealing with knee issues much of that season.
