Florham Park – It was an interesting afternoon practice in Florham, that included a goalline drill. Here are notes galore . . .
Defensive end Lorenzo Washington is an under-the-radar player who is quietly having a good camp. He had two nice run stops around the line in practice today.
Washington was in camp last summer with Dallas after being signed as an undrafted free agent. He also spent the last two months of the 2010 season on the New England Patriots practice squad.
Coming out of Nick Saban’s Alabama program, he knows how to play 3-4 end, and has the requisite size at 6-4, 296 . . .
Jamaal Westerman continues to have an excellent camp. He had two impressive plays in a row. First he stopped Bilal Powell on the line, and then on the next play, he burst into the backfield, making Mark Brunell throw the ball away . . .
Mo Wilkerson had a couple of nice plays – he blocked a Mark Sanchez pass, and also showed good hustle, chasing Mark Brunell out of bounds on a scramble to the left side . . .
Speaking of Brunell, he’s had a better camp than Sanchez.
Look-it, this doesn’t mean much, there is no battle here.
Sanchez needs to get going . . .
Oregon State linebacker Joey LaRocque is long-shot to make the team, but he’s one tough SOB. He leveled TE Josh Baker on a crossing right . . .
In the goalline drill, Brodney Pool stopped Shonn Greene in the backfield on a running play. Pool is a very good run stopping safety, who is poised for a big year now that he’s comfortable in the system . . .
Kenrick Ellis was pancaked by D’Brickashaw Ferguson paving the way for a touchdown run by Shonn Greene. Ellis is very raw . . .
Rookie quarterback Greg McElroy is good at throwing on the run. He rolled left and hit FB Greg Toal, and then rolled right and hit Baker. This McElroy looks like a seventh round steal . . .
Greene’s fumble in the goalline drill makes you think that LaDainian Tomlinson is going to run the ball more than we expect. Greene is a terrific talent, but he has a history of ball security issues, and if that rears it’s ugly head again this year, LT’s going to get the ball more than planned . . .
I don’t know what is going on with DE Marcus Dixon, but he’s just not having much of an impact in this camp. He’s been a non-factor . . .
Jerricho Cotchery signed with Pittsburgh.
I haven’t seen the numbers yet on the contract, but this wasn’t totally about money.
It was about respect.
Cotchery is a prideful guy, and felt the Jet were jerking him around the last few years, constantly looking for other #2 receivers, and his inner compass told him to get out of here . . .
Eric Smith broke up a deep pass in practice.
He looks like he has more range this year. He definitely worked on his speed this off-season.
