New Jersey – A few things to consider when you look at the Darrelle Revis mess. And mess is what it is, just like Neil Schwartz likes it.
Schwartz is from the “squeaky wheel gets the oil” school of negotiating.
He doesn’t believe in playing nice; he believes in getting as much money as possible for his clients.
This is going to get ugly over the new few months.
Usually, this is how the blueprint works – Schwartz or somebody else in his camp makes the Jets look as bad as possible publicly with leaks, but keeps his client out it – make the client look like the “good cop” (like when Revis claimed the trade rumors left him “speechless.”)
John Idzik just arrived, and he doesn’t need one of these protracted public smear campaigns from Team Revis, as he’s trying to fix this mess. He’s got a lot of work to do, and it’s not all centered on Revis, not by a long-shot.
And it seems like the Jets Nation is tired of this show which is in repeats.
You had the rookie holdout, you are the 2010 mess, you had more issues last spring, and now this.
It never stops.
“I don’t think this kid is ever going to be happy, financially,” said ESPN’s Andrew Brandt, a former Green Bay Packers executive.
With that being said, you can understand the Jets likely looking into a trade.
And the Jets have the rare luxury of having two #1 corners, a rarity in the NFL. You saw that come in handy last season. When Revis went down, the Jets didn’t have a big drop off, if any at all, with Antonio Cromartie taking over the #1 corner role.
Also, remember the cornerback situation Idzik and company had in Seattle.
The Seahawks had one of the best pair of corners in football this year in Richard Marshall and Brandon Browner. Think about how they got them. Marshall was a fifth round pick in 2011, and Browner was signed from the CFL.
And neither makes big money. Actually, they both made around the league minimum this season.
So this idea of spending so much money for your two starting corners is something that Idzik probably isn’t that into.
Also, let’s not forget the Jets have Aaron Berry under contract for next year. He was signed after the Revis’ injury last season. Remember, before he got in trouble last off-season, he was slated to start for the Detroit Lions in 2012.
Also, Isaiah Trufant should be back next year coming off a knee.
They also have Kyle Wilson, Ellis Lankster and the underrated Darrin Walls.
Also, expect the Jets to pick a corner fairly high in the draft.
And another factor to consider – the Jets will likely pick a pass rusher in the first round like Jarvis Jenkins, Bjorn Woerner or Mingo.
The lack of a dominant pass rusher has really hurt the Jets the last few years.
Getting one of those is always a great help to corners. They don’t have to hold up on an island as long with a good pass rush.
So with all this being considered, a Revis trade is a distinct possibility.
