The latest on a mercurial Jet.
An arrest warrant was issued for Robby Anderson.
“An arrest warrant was issued Wednesday for troubled New York Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson, who failed to show up for a morning arraignment stemming from a previous reckless-driving charge, according to Broward County (Florida) court records,” reported ESPN’s Rich Cimini. “Anderson was required to appear at 8:30 a.m., according to an arraignment dated April 7.”
He lawyer Ed O’Donnell told NJ.com he never received any notification that Anderson was supposed to appear in court.
“This was no negligence on Robby’s part, and certainly not on mine,” he said.
Look, I’m not a lawyer, but even if there was an honest mistake, the Jets have to be pissed. According to a league source, Jets officials worked hard to get the felony charges dropped in this case, and now the player and lawyer don’t show up to court for the reduced charges?
But I will give Anderson the benefit of the doubt on this one. I just can’t believe he would blow off court after getting the charges greatly reduced. That makes no sense.
So my sense this is either on the lawyer or Broward County.
I don’t think the Jets will get rid of him over this.
He’s one of their best players, and Mike Maccagnan doesn’t seem to be one of those general managers who is obsessed with character.
He kept two fringe players – Dylan Donahue and Rashard Robinson – after recent arrests.
So if he kept two fringe players, who other teams probably would have released, is he going to bounce one of his best players over missing a court date?
Look, I’m not judging Maccagnan, I’m just dealing with the facts.
He clearly doesn’t have an issue taking chances on players with character concerns, whether it’s Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Mike Pennel, Robinson or linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis, who has signed after he was arrested in January in Kansas City on misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance, first marijuana possession, having no driver’s license, possession of drug paraphernalia and no display of a numbered license plate.
So Anderson should be fine.
Maccagnan is a very forgiving man.
He’s looking to build a winner and clearly is no one of those football executives obsessed with the character stuff. He wants to add good football players, not choir boys. I’m not judging, just keeping it real, folks.
And the Jets don’t have a lot of star players. Anderson is a special talent, a difference-maker.
He not only has world-class speed, but is also 6-3 and has loose hips So he has a unique combination of great speed and height and the fluid hips to cut away from defenders.
He had opposing defenders scared to death last year.
He actually caught a ton of short to mid-range passes because defensive backs were playing way off of him, scared of getting beat deep.
Anderson came into the league as an undrafted free agent due to character concerns, which turned out to be real since he’s been arrested twice in the last year.
But there is no questioning his talent.
If he can get his act together, he has Pro Bowl potential.
