In this edition of “The Good Stuff,” Dan has notes on a number of topics, including a the Jets supposed gag order, a skyrocketing prospect the Jets have their eye on, and so much more . . .
One of the top wide receiver’s in the draft, Pitt’s Jonathan Baldwin, went to Alliquippa High School.
So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that fellow Alliquippa graduate, Darrelle Revis, is working with Baldwin on bump-and-run . . .
New York Times Jets’ beat writer Greg Bishop accused the Jets have having a gag order in place in Florham Park.
Bishop reported the Jets’ brass wouldn’t allow him to talk to anybody for a story he was doing on the furloughs.
Jets spokesman Bruce Speight says Bishop’s contention wasn’t entirely true.
“There is no policy that prevents us from accommodating interview request,” Speight said. “ As always, we evaluate every request on a case-by-case basis.”
For furlough stories, the Jets decided Speight would handle all interviews on that topic.
Whether you agree with the Jets furloughs or not, you can understand them not wanting to set up interviews with employees facing a salary reduction.
The Times also ran a photo showing no players at the complex.
“Nice job by the caption writer for the photo accompanying that story, saying players aren’t showing up at the complex,” said one long-time Jets observer. “That may be true, but problem was their photographer took a photo of the business entrance to the building. Players wouldn’t be going through that entrance anyway.” . . .
I’m not going to get into what player workouts Jets officials are attending. I used to do that, but it’s meaningless. The Jets check out thousands of players through the draft process, with scouts, Terry Bradway, Joey Clinkscales, Scott Cohen, Mike Tannenbaum and company. The fact that Rex Ryan was at Illinois and Missouri, doesn’t mean anything.
I’ll never forget when the Jets picked James Farrior, and they never worked him out or interviewed him.
Who is at a workout is meaningless. It’s people doing their jobs. That is it . . .
A published report claims the Jets are one of four teams interested in running back Tiki Barber, 36, who is coming out of retirement.
Isn’t it always interesting that whether it’s JaMarcus Russell, Randy Moss, or any free agent at a particular time, the Jets are on the list.
That is because Tannenbaum believes in checking into everything, even if it’s far-fetched, so that leads agents and others to speculate that the Jets are interested.
Once the labor strife is resolved, it’s hard seeing the Jets signing Barber.
But if they suffer an injury, they would likely be interested. . . .
Earlier this week I wrote that Arizona outside linebacker Brooks Reed might be a reach at 30. But upon further review, maybe not. He is really shooting up the charts after some great workouts.
Some scouts view him as a poor man’s Clay Mathews.
He has 4.6 speed, quick feet and is absolutely relentless. The Jets need this kind of guy coming off the edge, who takes a maniacal approach to getting after the quarterback.
Reed is definitely on the Jets’ radar . . .
Nice touch by Tannenbaum, flying out to California for the funeral of agent Gary Wichard . . .
