There is no way around this, it’s a bad optic, and perhaps doesn’t send an ideal message. Why go there?
(THE NEXT UPDATE THIS WEEK WILL BE BY 9:30 PM ON SATURDAY NIGHT, NOT FRIDAY NIGHT)
There were some transactions.
This Nick Folk release doesn’t sit right with me.
The Jets come out of the box today making their first big moves to start clearing cap space, and they released Breno Giacomini and Nick Folk. I know they released Ryan Clady already, but that was expected, a no-brainer since he blew out his shoulder and had a crazy contract option. Everyone knew that was going to happen. He essentially signed a one-year contract in 2016.
So to me the Giacomini/Folk moves get the Jets’ off-season going in earnest.
Giacomini made sense. He had myriad medical issues this past year and recently had back surgery.
Also, the season before last, in 2015, he had an inconsistent season.
So this move I get.
This Folk move is a bad optic.
This team wasted a fortune on secondary players the last two seasons. A fortune!
Darrelle Revis made $33 million in guaranteed money in 2015-16. Some of you in business know the expression ROI – Return on investment. This Revis signing has to be one of the worst ROI’s in NFL history.
This team spent $12 million on Ryan Fitzpatrick last year and it’s well documented he didn’t have his best season.
But today they released Folk, a kicker who made 87 of his field goals in 2016, to save $3 million the cap?
I think this sends an awful message.
You have a team coming off an embarrassing season that featured six blowout losses.
You had a lot of players who underachieved last year, including some players who basically stole money.
And you release a player, a pro’s pro, like Folk, to save $3 million.
Sometime this stuff makes you wonder about the general manager
This move stinks to high heaven.
Look, I want to make something perfectly clear – I have no relationship with Folk. There is no hidden agenda here.
But we just witnessed a season where he was almost automatic when the Jets lined up to kick a field goal. And keep in mind, he had a rookie holder from Australia, who has been punting a football for just four years and has very little holding experience.
So Folk is gone, but Revis is still here? What kind of message does that send?
Revis was terrible last year. Folk was rock solid.
Perhaps the Jets are waiting to see what happens with Revis’ legal situation. If that is the case, and we find out there was a legal reason for not cutting him today with Folk and Giacomini, I will step up and say I was wrong for criticizing them.
But on paper, this move is frivolous.
You keep Revis and cut Folk, one of the few guys who did his job last year, to save $3 million on the cap.
What’s up with that?
Your team lacks consistency almost across the board last season, and you release one of the few guys who was consistent?
And Revis is still here?
