Cortland – Dan Leberfeld checks in with a bunch of Whispers from SUNY-Cortland with the good stuff from Jets Camp . . .
As reported in Jets Confidential Magazine, the Detroit Lions released guard Stephen Peterman because they felt like there was too much interior pressure on Matthew Stafford last year, and the veteran offensive lineman was one of the reasons why.
So it will be interesting to see how Peterman holds up against his old team, featuring talented defensive tackles Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley (who has had a good camp).
Peterman is a savvy pro, a war horse, but very limited athletically . . .
Calvin Pace was totally out of line for sounding off on Cortland.
“This is a drag, man. It really is a drag,” Pace told the Daily News. “To have to come up here in this town, there’s no reason we’d ever come here. That’s no offense against this town. It’s one of them things. “If it was my way, we’d stay home we’d be able to go sleep in your own bed. But I don’t know, for whatever reason teams think training camp is a must. It’s tough man, it is. I’m 32 years old staying in a dorm room, you know?
Get over it, man. Do you think our soldiers stationed all over the world, including in some hell holes, would rather sleep in their own beds?
So the Jets’ players have to go away for few weeks to training camp to Cortland. Who cares about their hardship? If that is what your bosses want you to do, you do it, and keep your mouth shut, especially since they were nice enough to re-sign you.
You get the sense that Pace isn’t thrilled with his contract, and might still be bitter about it. Remember, he was released during a cap purge after John Idzik took over, and then came back a couple of months later at a reduced price. Remember in May, he said about his new reduced one-year contact wasn’t a “happy tonic.”
The Jets better keep an eye on Pace with the media this year. He seems more than willing to go to the press to sound off.
He doesn’t seem like a “happy tonic” right now . . .
Kellen Winslow practiced for the second day in a row. He had been on a pitch count, and has rarely practiced two days in a row . . .
Backup nose tackle Junior Aumavae seems to have something seriously wrong with his left elbow. He has a big brace on it today. It looks like it’s hyper-extended . . .
Geno Smith did some extra running after practice today with quarterback coach David Lee. The other quarterbacks weren’t involved, just Smith . . .
Guard Brian Winters left knee still seems to be an issue, after getting hurt early in the scrimmage. The trainers were pushing the big fella really hard on a stationary bike today . . .
You know who isn’t bad? Rookie free agent left tackle Trey Gilleo out of Northern Arizona. He has pretty quick feet for a 6-7, 309-pounder.
He spent a lot of time after practice getting a lesson on technique from D’Brickashaw Ferguson.
Gilleo is from Kingman, Arizona, a sleepy town on the drive between between Las Vegas and Los Angeles . . .
Today, the Jets did more scout team preparation for a preseason game than I’ve seen in some time.
So often NFL teams just go into preseason games, run their plays, and don’t worry that much about the opponent.
But so much of the Jets’ practice today was prep work for the Lions, and what they like to do . . .
I still am not sure about Demario Davis in space, but one thing I’ve noticed all summer – the guy is a very good blitzer . . .
You have to think Josh Bush is on the roster bubble. Antonio Allen seems entrenched in the starting safety role next to Dawan Landry.
Bush is a nice kid, but I’m just not seeing a lot of plays from him this summer . . .
I really like rookie free agent wide receiver K.J. Stroud out of Bethune-Cookman. He has nice size (6-3, 205), speed (4.4) and has very good hands. He also works very hard.
This guy could turn out to be a steal . . .
