It’s time for another edition of “Behind the Jets.” Today we get into a number of different topics around the Jets. Let’s get into it . . .
Antonio Cromartie has had hip issues in the past, so his current hip problems have to concern the Jets. He was limited in practice the last two days . . .
The Jets are starting Geno Smith in the opener because they have to, not because he won the job. They really have no choice this week.
He could be out in a couple of weeks if he flops. Not out permanently, but for now. They aren’t going to write off this year to develop him on the job, I can assure you of that . . .
Aside from the mental part which is so hard for a rookie quarterback, a big concern regarding Geno Smith is his body.
Seeing him up close on a number of occasions, he’s undersized, not particularly muscular.
If I were the Jets, I’d be very worried about him getting hurt.
I’m not predicting an injury – I would never do that. I hate when reporters do that.
But one thing that has helped Mark Sanchez withstand a lot of punishment over his first four years is the fact that he lives in the weight room. He’s in tremendous shape – has a lot of muscle mass.
Geno doesn’t have a lot of muscle mass.
If I’m the Jets, I’m very worried about his durability right now.
The guy needs a lot of work in the weight room, he really does.
A full off-season workout program will do him well . . .
Two important names to keep any eye on, on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers injury report – tight end Tom Crabtree and guard Carl Nicks.
Crabtree, a former Green Bay Packer, is scheduled to have a big role on offense for Tampa Bay, either as the starter or the #2 tight end.
Nicks is one of the best guards in the league.
Neither is likely to play . . .
Damon Harrison will start at nose tackle for the Jets this week. I hear he’s been working with the starting lineup this week . . .
Quinton Coples was on the practice field this week.
He had some tape on his lower right leg, but not in a brace, or caste.
Coples suffered a small break in lower right leg . . .
Rex Ryan on Dee Milliner today, “We know he’s an outstanding player.”
No we don’t. He was a very college player. We have no idea whether he’s an outstanding NFL player.
We will see . . .
Stephen Hill continues to display very inconsistent hands in practice. This has to have the Jets coaches very nervous . . .
Some in the media are obsessed with Geno Smith “looking over his shoulder,” since he hasn’t been named the permanent starter.
They need to get over it.
It would be insane to name Smith the starter long-term now.
He hasn’t looked that great in practice . . .
Ian O’Connor wrote today about the Jets’ poor weapons.
I can see it now, if Geno Smith succeeds it’s because of the quarterback, if not, it’s the weapons.
Quarterbacks make receivers, receivers don’t make quarterbacks.
I’m so sick of this angle.
The Jets have enough weapons . . .
