Let’s look at what he said and keep it real . . .
I’m talking about Jets offensive coordinator John Morton’s press conference today.
I want to make it clear that I’m not picking on Morton. I’m just separating wheat the from the chaff on the coach-speak.
What did Morton think of Petty performance in New Orleans?
“I thought it was good,” Morton said.
No, it wasn’t. It was very average.
19-39 for 179 yards with one TD, two picks and a 49 QB-rating is average at best.
How was practice this week?
“I’ll tell you what, we had a really good week of practice so far, so we’re really good,” Morton said.
Meaningless. You can’t touch the QB in practice, so what does a “good week of practice” really mean, especially when on Sunday you are facing the best pass rush duo in football – Joey Bosa and Mel Ingram – trying to punish the QB on every play.
So “a good week of practice” is pretty meaningless in the NFL.
What is wrong with Petty’s footwork (Todd Bowles mentioned this)?
“It’s just footwork,” Morton said. “Whether it’s a three, five or seven step drop, making sure you get the right footwork and speeding up the drop and getting the ball out and those types of things. Coach (Jeremy) Bates works on that every single day, so that’s something that he noticed that he has to clean up, and we made a big emphasis on that in the last few days and he’s really responded.”
Yes, he’s really responded without Bosa and Ingram trying to take his head off on every play. Do you really think a QB is going to improve his footwork a ton in-season? Let’s get real people. Not to be cynical, but it would be a major surprise if Petty’s footwork improved this week, especially with the dynamic duo attacking him from his front and backside on every play.
Why didn’t the Jets’ offense take more vertical shots in New Orleans?
“There were a couple of chances we could have had, but it just didn’t go that way,” Morton said.
The media, and a lot of fans, love the deep ball, and they usually want it called more. It’s the cookbook answer to what ails an offense. Maybe they are fantasy players. You don’t win in the NFL chucking the ball down field ad infitintum. It doesn’t work that way. Ask any offensive coordinator.
Was Petty rushing throws due to his limited game experience?
“I’m not an expert at the quarterback position,” Morton said.
Become one. You need to be as an NFL offensive coordinator. I know he has a QB coach, and a good one in Jeremy Bates, but in a passing league, the OC needs to be a QB expert. And I actually think Morton is, but he just was trying to deflect the question.
Are three or four games enough time to evaluate a young quarterback?
“It might not be,” Morton said. “I don’t have the right answer to that, I really don’t.”
I do. In the case of Petty, yes, three or four games is enough? Why?
He had four starts last year.
Four starts last year, and three starts (four appearances) this year is a enough.
He got his stage.
