It’s how the New England Patriots would handle it, so why not do what your rivals do once in a while? This is a very competitive league. Nice guys finish . . .
Darrelle Revis was held out of practice today due to a groin injury.
Some are up in arms that the Todd Bowles didn’t bring it up in his press conference.
But hey, nobody asked.
Now in defense of reporters, it’s hard to ask about something you don’t know about.
And when the media was in the locker room, Revis wasn’t asked about the injury. because once again. the reporters didn’t know about it.
After all the media availability was over, the Jets and Eagles put out their injury report, and Revis was on it.
So the media had no way to ask about the injury. Bowles and the players were done talking when the report came out.
The only recourse was to hope for a leak from Revis’ agents which sometimes happens. They are very media-friendly, as we know.
But so far, nothing. Perhaps the Jets told them to keep a lid on it.
Some tried to get Jets publicist Bruce Speight to shed some light on the severity of the injury, but the company line was that Todd Bowles will address the matter tomorrow.
Good for the Jets.
As much as I hate to say this as a member of the media, this is a smart approach. Make the Philadelphia Eagles wait to find out what is going on with the Jets’ top corner.
Let them prepare for Revis and his backups.
Do you think the Patriots (or Chip Kelly’s Eagles for that matter), would give an injury update on Wednesday night after media availability is over? No way.
“Revis was in the locker room and looked fine,” tweeted veteran beat writer Brian Costello of the New York Post. “Just mysterious the Jets won’t say anything about the injury.”
I understand where B-Co is coming from. It’s frustrating for a reporter. However I don’t think it’s “mysterious,” I think it’s smart.
Make the opponent wait.
As for Revis’ groin, I’d be lying to you if I said I have great insight on what is wrong.
However, I will say this – the NFL has a 100 percent injury rate. It’s the nature of the sport. Everybody is dealing with something – minor, major and in-between.
If Revis felt a tweak in his groin, of course you shut him down for a Wednesday practice. Play it safe.
But if he has a groin issue on Sunday that could be a big problem for the Jets because Revis clearly doesn’t run as well as he used to. so to throw a groin injury into the hopper, which would hurt his speed and explosion even more, is not a good thing for the Jets or their star corner.
We will have more on this tomorrow, but I give the Jets credit for how they handled this today. In the past they might have been browbeat into giving out the info, but Bowles doesn’t roll that way. He will make everyone, including the Eagles, wait until tomorrow for more info, and even then, the info will likely be scant.
