The Jets had a little bit of a scare in Wednesday’s practice . . .
. . . when Henry Anderson looked like he suffered a shoulder injury and had to leave the field for a bit.
He was on the sideline flexing his right shoulder for a while, and spent some time huddling with a trainer.
But about a half-hour later I saw him doing individual drills with defensive line coach Andre Carter, so he seems fine.
To me, it looked like a stinger.
But this shows you, that even with the limited contact in spring drills, and no tackling, there is still plenty of combat in the trenches between lineman.
There was a fight on Tuesday between guard Ben Braden and DT Nathan Shepherd.
And on Wednesday, there is was a near fight between OT Kelvin Beachum and OLB Jordan Jenkins.
They were entangled, and it continued after the play was over, and Jenkins had Beachum around his middle-section and looked like he was about to take him to the ground, but Jenkins regained his cool and pulled up . . .
Speaking of Shepherd, this is a big spring and summer for him, especially since the new regime didn’t pick him. He had a rough rookie year, which I don’t blame him for, which I have said many times. He was a super-raw prospect out of tiny Fort Hays State who the previous staff totally rushed into the lineup.
He had a terrific run stop up on the middle today – shedding a blocker and stopping Eli McGuire on the line . . .
I forgot to mention this yesterday, but rookie safety John Battle, who was held out on Tuesday, was back practicing on Wednesday.
Veteran free agent pickup Tom Compton, a guard/right tackle who was with Minnesota last year, and before that Chicago, Atlanta and Washington, was held out of mini-camp.
There was no announcement about what is wrong with him, but from what I noticed, he had a his left calf wrapped.
The 2012 sixth-round pick of the Redskins out of South Dakota has a good chance of making it . . .
What can Brown do for you?
In the case of the Jets, maybe a lot.
Two guys who helped themselves in the minicamp were tight end Daniel Brown and cornerback Kyron Brown.
They both looked terrific. Daniel Brown is a mobile tight end with good hands, who also lined up at fullback a little in camp. He’s also good on special teams.
It’s been well documented the Jets could use some help at cornerback, and based on what I saw, don’t sleep on Kyron Brown.
He was consistently at the right place at the right time. What I saw was a player with “plus instincts” as scouts like to say . . .
While on the topic of cornerback, Derrick Jones had a strong red-zone drill on Wednesday with defensed passes on back-to-back plays.
It’s a real mystery why this guy didn’t play much last year and was stuck behind Rashad Robinson for the fourth CB spot.
He has great speed, can jump out of the gym and consistently gets his hands on the rock.
Look, you can attack for the former GM for some things, but who played on game day was up to the coach.
Why the former coach refused to play Jones last year was a head-scratcher . . .
I asked Quinnen Williams (above) what he thought of some personnel evaluators saying while he’s has amazing quickness, speed and athleticism for his size, he needs some more power in his game. He shot down the premise and said “look at the film.” . . .
After I published this story, it was announced that Joe Douglas has agreed to terms to be the Jets GM.
The only candidate that made sense. Truly ready for the job, has a background with Gase, and is an alpha dog. Putting Gase with a stranger telling him who was on his roster wouldn’t have worked. Gase knows and respects Douglas.
