Let’s get into it . . .
Leonard Williams is playing on a very high level.
Last week he dominated the Denver Broncos’ guard Connor McDermott, and the guard was actually benched this week, in favor of Max Garcia. Against Indianapolis, he has some awfully impressive plays against Indianapolis Colts guard Quenton Nelson, the best guard in the 2018 draft. One scout told me that Nelson was the safest pick in the 2018 draft.
“He forklifts people,” the scout said about the Notre Dame prospect.
On one play, Williams torched Nelson into a gap for a QB pressure, displaying amazing first-step quickness for a 300-pounder.
And then an tremendous play where he ran over Nelson, who is a powerhouse, and got in Andrew Luck’s face, contributing to the Darron Lee interception.
Williams was good his first couple of year with the Jets, but I think we are finally seeing the player who some saw as the next Kevin Williams or maybe Reggie White . . .
Quincy Enunwa hurt his ankle against the Colts and didn’t return.
Watching Enunwa play, he just seems like a guy who is going to have a hard time staying healthy, and I will tell you why.
He plays every down like it’s his last. His toughness, fire and motor are special, but can you play wide receiver like a linebacker and stay healthy with all the hits he’s taking trying to break tackles like a Tazmanian devil?
We should tip our hats to him for his heart, but is this style conducive to staying healthy?
Perhaps not . . .
While the Jets win over the Colts with very impressive, we need to keep in mind that Colts might be the most banged up team in the league.
They just signed defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad to their roster today, and he played extensively at end with standout defensive end Margus Hunt sidelined.
Their playing a bunch of no names at receiver, and two of those guys ended up getting hurt at MetLife Stadium, and had to leave the game.
“Andrew Luck has nobody to throw to,” said one national NFL reporter at the game today.
Their offensive line was missing their starting right guard AND right tackle.
Look I’m no looking to make excuses for the Colts, but there situation is dire.
And the Jets one 42-34.
Quite honestly, it should not have been that close considering how ravaged the Colts are, but the bottom line is the Jets won. That is all that matters.
All I’m saying is that, while the Jets won, you have to keep in mind what a mess their opponent was.
And the Jets will have to play a lot better next week against Minnesota, and obviously against Green Bay and New England coming up . . .
Joe Namath is a huge fan of Sam Darnold.
“He’s got talent,” Namath said. “He carries himself beautifully. He’s a smart man. He’s a good man. You can’t fool your teammates and they love him. It is a team game. They need more pieces to be able to compete at a championship level.”
