Parts Unknown – Cortland seems to be very good for the Jets, and the Jets seem very good for Cortland . . .
Even though some fans and reporters don’t like it, Cortland is a good idea.
The Jets got a lot of quality work done in the Central New York small city, and it was a good bonding experience. It seemed to help them a great deal, but only time will tell on that one.
But it was certainly good for Cortland.
Like a lot of upstate towns and cities, they have seen better days.
Companies like Rubbermaid, Smith-Corona and Brockway are long gone.
So is the Bob Evans’ restaurant pictured above.
And I know it’s only three weeks out of 52, but Jets being in Cortland does really help local businesses.
I was speaking to the owner of Hairy Tony’s Restaurant (Mark Sanchez and his father love this place). He said that the most successful three weeks he’s ever had, over 20 years, was the Jets’ three week stay two years ago. Perhaps, he did better this year, we will see. I didn’t have a chance to talk to him at the end of camp.
Mark Braun from Doug’s Fish Fry said it was a great run for him this summer.
I spoke to a worker at a Cortland business, I can’t name because I don’t want to get the guy in trouble, but he said he got a raise based on how well they did during the Jets’ stay.
Money in New York State is tight with Albany dealing with a major deficit, so the SUNY schools aren’t getting as much funding as in the past. The Jets being at SUNY-Cortland has been a boon to the school. Applications are way up, and there is a lot of construction on campus.
So it’s good to see how much the Jets presence helps this sleepy upstate New York town . . .
In my opinion, the Jets schedule isn’t a bear.
Teams like Jacksonville, St. Louis, Miami and Seattle look like average ball clubs.
I’m watching Buffalo- Minnesota right now.
Buffalo looks average.
I think Buffalo’s defensive line should be very good with the additions with Mario Williams and Mark Anderson, but I think the left tackle position is still problematic, and I think they are so-so at linebacker and at corner.
I’d be shocked if the Jets aren’t right there in playoff contention in December.
This schedule isn’t that daunting . . .
NFL teams are definitely tightening their belts.
The Vikings are simulcasting their broadcast, and have the same broadcast team for TV and radio.
A friend of mine, who works for a team website (not the Jets), was asked to take a pay cut. He really doesn’t make that much money,
I’m continuing to snoop around on this Matt Slauson pay cut.
Did the Jets really need to take back $250,000 from Slauson?
I’m telling you, with the tough economy, whether it’s simulcasts, paycuts for team workers or what happened to Slauson, clubs are hurting more than they want to lead on.
I’m not saying we need to hold a fundraiser for NFL teams, but there are things going on that make you think, things (like ticket sales) aren’t as well as other years.
