It was the tweet heard around the football world, and the relationship between some Jets players and the media might never been the same because of it . . .
What happened with between the Jets players and the TV Azteca reporter is turning into an enormous story.
And it would have been a non-story if Bart Hubbuch didn’t report it.
Another example of why the coaches and players don’t want us at practice.
We report stuff that they don’t consider a big deal and then it turns into a major fiasco.
Hubbuch’s tweet about whatever happened at Jets camp, and there are different accounts, is a disaster for media relations.
There are going to be players who are going to cut off the media now, or do very little with the press the rest of the year.
I wouldn’t be shocked if Kris Jenkins shuts it down, maybe Jason Taylor – guys whose names were brought up in the imbroglio.
What the PC Police don’t want us to bring up here is how weird it is for women reporters to be in that locker room with nude players, some married.
The players hate it, but are afraid to say anything about it. Afraid of the PC Police.
The last player to speak out against it was Kevin Mawae, a deeply religious man, who thought it was immoral.
There are plenty of really good women football writers. It has nothing to do with qualifications.
How would any guys out there, reading this story, like to undress in front of women you barely know, and do it on a daily basis during the season?
I remember last year a female reporter made fun of David Clowney’s lime green underwear?
Are you kidding me?
I will be the only one to bring this up. Believe me. People are scared to go down this road.
What is the answer? I would say let the reporters in the locker room before practice – let them in as the player are almost in their full uniform about to head out to the field.
And if I was a woman reporter, I wouldn’t dress like the woman from TV Azteca. I would dress very conservatively if I knew I would be going into a locker room.
She was wearing really tight jeans. She’s a very attractive woman, a former model.
Now, it’s dangerous to imply that she brought the catcalls on herself by what she was wearing. It’s irresponsible to say that. It’s like saying a woman who is sexually attacked, brought it on herself because of her outfit.
I’m not going to go there.
But if a woman is dressed this way, and it’s her right, I would try to set up here interviews in another room, not the locker room, and bring the players in there. I’m not being a sexist, just a realist.
I think this whole mess is going to really damage the relationship between reporters and some Jets, who won’t trust us anymore.
Hubbuch should have passed on tweeting this.
Sometimes you gotta think cause and effect.
Some things reporters should just leave in the locker room or the practice field.
What a mess.
Wait until you see the papers on Monday.
And believe me, nobody is going to cut the players any slack at all. Rex and the Jets are going to get hammered. They are going to write about a frat boy environment.
All this on the day of the team’s enormously important Monday Night opener against Baltimore.
Can you say – “distraction?”
