Waxhaw – The Jets quarterback play wasn’t very good to say the least. The Jets didn’t get much done in the passing game.
Mark Sanchez didn’t play well.
The Jets first possession ended with Sanchez throwing into double coverage to Braylon Edwards and the pass was nearly picked up off by cornerback Chris Gamble. Honestly, it was almost triple coverage. There was another DB in the vicinity.
On the second possession, Sanchez threw a real nice crossing route to Jerricho Cotchery, the receiver made a great catch with Gamble in tight coverge. He got rocked by Gamble and another DB after the catch and held out.
Also on the second possession, Sanchez threw a screen to LT on the left side into a lot of traffic, and it was probably better off falling incomplete. It wasn’t going to work.
Late in the first quarter, Sanchez overthrew Edwards on a deep pass. But honestly, Edwards didn’t show a great burst on this play, so you can argue it wasn’t a terrible pass. But Sanchez clearly needs to gauge Edwards speed better on this kind of route.
Late in the first, Sanchez threw into tight coverage on the right side to Santonio Holmes. He wasn’t open. It’s possible Sanchez was throwing this away. But one thing is clear, the chemistry of these two guys is a work-in-progress. They aren’t on the same page yet.
And on the last play of the first quarter, Sanchez did a poor job of selling a screen to LT and Captain Munnerlyn was all over it, and stopped the runner for a loss of three.
Munnerlyn victimized the Jets again in the second quarter when Mark Brunell attempted a quick slant to Holmes, and it was knocked away by the underrated corner.
Brunell overthrew Larry Taylor on a quick slant late in the first half. It wasn’t even close.
You get the point, the quarterbacks were awful.
Both the starting offensive line and the backups didn’t play well, so that didn’t help.
The Jets best pass play of the entire game was a 20-yard square-in to Jeff Cumberland in the third quarter. Clemens did a good job of putting the ball only where the tight end could grab it – low and inside.
