New Jersey – Sportscaster Steve Wrigley of CBS 47 News in Jacksonville created a stir this morning with a story about the Jags making a play for Tim Tebow. Let’s take a closer look . . .
I guess the story wasn’t accurate, but it should have been. Jacksonville should look to trade for Tebow. In fact they should have traded for him in the spring when he was available.
Blaine Gabbert likely isn’t the answer. He has pocket flaws that are going to be hard to fix, and Chad Henne is best suited to be a backup.
I know football decisions should not be driving by the business side of an organization, but we all know Jacksonville constantly has issues selling tickets.
Under the guidance of new team president Mark Lamping (former head of MetLife Stadium), they are practically giving the tickets away. They have $20 tickets, and they also don’t charge for small children. They are doing everything they can to paper the house.
Since they don’t really have their answer at QB now, why not bring in Tebow to at least “hold-the-fort” as Bill Parcells used to say, until they find their answer.
Tebow is HUGE in Jacksonville, and they would likely sell out every game. And wait until the Jets play there. That game will likely sell out, and there will be tons of Tebow jersey’s in the crowd. It remains to be seen if he will start that game.
A Jets official, likely Bruce Speight, told several reporters, including Manish Mehta and Albert “Bert” Breer, that there were no Tebow trade talks with the Jaguars.
This was in response a report from Action News Jacksonville.
“Tim Tebow could soon be a part of our home team. Sources tell Action Sports, the Jaguars are making a play to trade for Tebow before the trade deadline this Thursday.” – Steve Wrigley, Action Sports.
People were quick to dismiss Wrigley’s story, and perhaps rightfully so, but keep one thing in mind – Wrigley, along with being a sport anchor for a local television station, also does shows for the Jaguars, including a pre-game show.
He’s pretty plugged into the Jacksonville scene. Maybe he misread the tea leaves on this one, but the man does have good sources with the Jaguars.
And remember, while the Jets were quick to say they aren’t talking to the Jaguars about Tebow, nobody said the Jaguars didn’t call them to inquire.
But the Jets seem intent of keeping Tebow, at least for the rest of this season, and there are probably two good reasons.
The Jets brass doesn’t want to admit a mistake. I’m not saying the Tebow trade was a mistake yet since half the season remains, but a trade would bring the vultures out, to destroy Mike Tannenbaum and company for making the trade, and then pulling the plug mid-season.
Secondly, Woody Johnson needs to keep Tebow around, in case the Jets fall out of contention. If the Jets season heads south the next few games, the Jets will likely turn to Tebow, and this should help Johnson at the gate. Tebow might not be a pretty passer, but he’s one of the Top Five most popular athletes in the United States, and there will people who would come to what might be meaningless games, just to see him.
