Florham Park, New Jersey – It’s time for a heaping helping of Minicamp Whispers. A lot of good stuff. Let’s get started . . .
I do think Jace Amaro is a terrific prospect, and will help the Jets a great deal, but at this point, I would say his hands are good, not great.
One catch early in practice, was a double-catch.
Like I said, he’s a very good prospect, but he does fight the ball at times . . .
RB Daryl Richardson is still limited in practice, but in his few reps today, you could see he has very soft hands catching the ball out of the backfield. This waiver claim is looking pretty darn smart right now with Mike Goodson AWOL . . .
A player so many fans love to hate, Stephen Hill, looked very good today. He had a really nice catch down the right seam. He also won a jump ball, on a 50-50 ball as they call it, where he beat Dimitri Patterson.
In the first play of the seven-on-seven portion of practice, Geno Smith hit Hill on a quick out.
I’m not putting this guy in Canton based on the spring, but he’s not nearly as bad as so many fans and reporters would lead you to believe in this era where Fantasy Football impacts how so many view players . . .
It seemed like Marty Mornhinweg dialed up a lot of quick throws for Geno today with the first-team offense. This is smart. In the football world, this is called, “confidence-building play-calling.” . . .
Kyle Wilson is still the team’s nickel back . . .
Will Campbell jumped off-sides, and was replaced by Patrick Ford on the second-team offense.
It’s really hard to gauge where Campbell is at, but perhaps the Jets should consider a year on the practice squad for him, something they should have done last year. This guy has a lot of potential, but still needs a lot of work. This is the kind of player that could have used the old NFL Europe, to get a ton of quality reps on games to help him. This league really helped Brandon Moore make the move from DT to OG . . .
Geno Smith was way off target to Jalen Saunders over the middle. The 5-9, 165 pound receiver was hard to see with all the congestion in there. The first thing I thought watching the play was – this guy could get destroyed in there with his size . . .
Tommy Bohanon needs to take the next step.
He was somewhat inconsistent in practice today. He had a drop of a short pass in the flat, and was beat for a QB pressure by OLB Trevor Reilly . . .
Mo Wilkerson’s quickness for a 6-4, 315-pound player is awfully impressive.
One of the most impressive plays in the practice, Wilkerson blew by Breno Giacomini and this forced Smith to dump to Bohanon in the right flat.
I think Wilkerson shocked Giacomini with his quickness for a man that big . . .
Watching the OTA’s and the first minicamp practice, so far, Michael Vick is the better quarterback. He makes quicker decisions, and is more accurate. He should be better, he has much more experience. Jets need to win this year. What do you think they should do? . . .
Tajh Boyd threw an out route to Saalim Hakim. The only problem was Hakim was running a fly route.
There is no question Hakim as world class speed, but he needs so much polish as a receiver, and I don’t know if he’s going to get that kind of time to work it out . . .
