East Rutherford – Dan checks in from MetLife Stadium with some Whispers and notes from the Jets’ 48-28 win over the Buffalo Bills . . .
In the spring, Joe McKnight made a great point about Tony Sparano as an offensive coordinator.
Joe basically said that Tony will keep calling something until you stop it.
A perfect example of that was the use of Jeremy Kerley today.
Leodis McKelvin (who is a very shaky cover guy) was covering Kerley, and couldn’t stop him, so the Jets hit Kerley repeatedly in the first half, including on a 12-yard TD pass.
This is a different approach than Brian Schottenheimer, who seemed to be more interested in spreading the ball around than riding a hot hand . . .
One player on the tackling issues on C.J. Spiller in the second half – “You need to keep moving your feet, you can’t dive at him.” . . .
Bart Scott refused to talk to the media after the game. He was very upset at the New York Post calling the Jets “clowns.” Remember, on the cover of the New York Post NFL preview section on Thursday, the Jets had Rex, Bart and Tebow dressed up in clown outfits.
But why would Bart punish everybody for what the Post did (and the Daily News a few weeks) earlier?
Actually, who cares?
It’s about time somebody on the Jets put their foot down. So much of the media treats this team like garbage.
Don’t get me wrong, I will be as critical as the next guy, but I try to not make it personal. There are too much personal attacks, like what the Post did.
Players and coaches have said for years, rip us when we make mistakes, but don’t get personnel . . .
Nick Mangold when asked why the Wildcat didn’t work better today – “I don’t have any idea. I don’t have eyes in the back of my head.” . . .
Aside from stopping the run better, the Jets’ running game also needs to improve.
The Jets ran 36 times for 118 yards, but if you take out that one 14-yard run by Shonn Greene, it was 35 times for 104 yards, and that average is under 3 yards per.
While the talented Bills’ front line didn’t do a great job rushing the quarterback, they did a terrific job against the run.
And it’s not going to get any easier next week for the Jets. Pittsburgh’s 3-4 has been hard to run against for the last decade, and this year should be no different.
“We will need to look at the film and see what was wrong with the running game,” Mangold said . . .
David Harris had his right knee wrapped leaving the locker room . . .
Antonio Cromartie had his left shoulder wrapped . . .
The Jets really, really missed Sione Pouha today. He’s one of the best run stopping nose tackles in the NFL. The Bills ran 26 times for 195 yards, including a 56-yard TE scamper by C.J. Spiller.
Kenrick Ellis was dominated by Bills center Eric Wood. Ellis really struggled getting off blocks today.
Ellis is okay as a backup nose tackle, but the Jets definitely need Pouha back as the starter.
I asked Sione as he was leaving the locker room if he’d be back next week.
“Should be, I’m progressing good – the goal is to play,” Pouha said . . .
The Jets had trouble covering Bills TE Scott Chandler.
Based on what I saw today and in the summer, it doesn’t look like the coverage of the tight ends has improved that much.
At least they have six more weeks to get it fixed before the first New England game . . .
