Kellen Clemens takes off and runs on too many plays. The guy works his tail off, but just doesn’t have the best field vision . . .
For some reason, during this mini-camp, the Jets gave a lot of QB reps to Brad Smith. Eric Ainge and Kevin O’Connell could have used the work. I’m still not sure why Smith got so many reps. Smith does so many terrific things for the Jets, but he’s a very average passer. That is why most teams told him in the draft process he was going to have to change position coming out of Missouri as a QB.
There is one positive that could come out of the all the QB reps he got. When the Jets use the Wildcat this year, maybe Smith can be more of a passing threat. The Jets are becoming too predictable in the Wildcat. Smith has only thrown one pass in his career out of that formation. You get the sense with all the QB reps he received this spring, the Jets will allow him to throw more this year . . .
The Jets like a formation with Jerricho Cotchery and Dustin Keller next to each other in the slot with Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes on the outside. What a nightmare that is going to be for opposing defenses? . . .
Wide receiver Britt Davis has stepped up his game this spring. He made a number of impressive plays in the OTA’s and minicamp. One minicamp play of note was beating Eric Smith deep for a touchdown . . .
The communication in the Jets secondary is still a work-in-progress. In the minicamp, Holmes split Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie on the right side for a long touchdown. Revis released him in the middle of the route, looking for deep help, and he didn’t get it.
With two new starters in the secondary, Cromartie and Brodney Pool, there are still a lot of communication issues to work out . . .
Punter T.J. Conley kicked the heck out of the ball in the minicamp. He is going to give Steve Weatherford a real battle this summer . . .
James Ihedigbo got his hands on a lot of passes in the minicamp. He seems poised to take a big step this year at safety . . .
This Revis contract debacle isn’t being handled well by either side. If Mike Tannenbaum and/or Rex Ryan told Revis that he should be the highest paid cornerback in the league, as Revis claims, that was a big mistake from a negotiating standpoint. The Jets won’t comment on this, so we will have to take Revis’ word on this. If they told him this, than they have to backup their words.
And Neil Schwartz constantly leaking nasty stuff to the New York Post to smear the Jets is getting old.
Revis keeps talking about the Jets being “family” and he doing this “the right way.” If that is the case, then why is he allowing Schwartz to destroy the Jets, off-the-record, with regularity? How is that “the right way?”
Both sides need to get their acts together in this negotiation that has become vitriolic . . .
Vernon Gholston did make a few plays in minicamp, but let’s see what happens when the pads are on this summer . . .
