Mobile – Time for a heaping helping of Senior Bowl Whispers from JC editor Dan Leberfeld down in Mobile, Alabama . . .
We all know how the Jets need to improve the pass coverage of their linebackers.
They might want to keep an eye on Oklahoma inside linebacker Deion Jones.
He had a tremendous defensed pass in today’s practice about 40 yards down the right seam on a tight end . . .
Speaking of inside linebackers, Stanford’s Blake Martinez looked very instinctive in practice – making a number of nice plays . . .
Watching the South roster practice this afternoon, you can see why the NFL has a QB crisis. I don’t think any of the four quarterbacks are going to make it on the next level. None of them.
Maybe that is why the South coaches (the Jacksonville staff) was running a ton of read-option . . .
Baylor defensive end Shawn Oakman is an interesting prospect. He was tossed off the team at Penn State, and landed in Waco. He says he learned his lesson.
Perhaps, but he has some work to do on the field. One thing I noticed in practice today was he was getting tossed to the ground too often by offensive lineman. He’s another one of these very tall lineman (6-7 ½) who needs to learn to play with a lower pad level . . .
Carson Wentz has such a strong arm, two of his throws were dropped by targets, because it arrived so fast, they didn’t seem ready – one to Michigan State WR Aaron Burbridge and other to Ohio State TE Nick Vannett.
By the way, keep an eye on Vannett. We know the Jets need to improve their production at tight end, and this guy is right out of Central Casting to be an NFL tight end – 6-6, 260 and very athletic . . .
Getting back to Wentz, one thing I’ve been very impressed with his ability to throw accurately running to his left, as a righty QB, which isn’t easy to do . . .
Ohio State QB turned WR Braxton Miller looks like he’s going to be special on the next level. He’s explosive in-and-out of his cuts, and has displayed very good hands.
And obviously he’s going to be a weapon on gadget plays. He ran two reverses today . . .
Louisville defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins looks like he’s going to be a star on the next level. He’s got very quick feet for a 302-pounder, and beat guards on back-to-back plays to get into the backfield today . . .
I know I have only been here today day, but it’s pretty clear Eastern Kentucky outside linebacker Noah Spence is just what the Jets need with the 20th pick. He’s an explosive edge-pass rusher who is constantly beating tackles getting into the backfield.
Because he got thrown out of Ohio State (tested positive for Ecstacy), I thought he would be available for the Jets at 20. But the way he’s lighting things up in Mobile. I’m not so sure. As we all know, good edge passers don’t grow on trees. And he’s a good one.
