Mobile, Alabama – Dan checks in from the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama with a variety of Jets notes and nuggets on prospects . . .
Saw Jets security chief Robert “Bobby” Mastroddi interviewing a prospect today at the Senior Bowl.
Aside from making sure they check out on the field and medically, looking into their backgrounds is a huge part of the process.
Mastroddi was with the NYPD for 20 years and was also in charge of former NY Governor George Pataki’s protection.
He knows how to vet people . . .
In my free agent review, I mentioned that it was unlikely that Calvin Pace will be back with the Jets as a player.
And now I can say for sure that is the case.
I saw him walking around a hotel lobby in Mobile.
I’m think to myself, “Mm, what is going on here – why would Calvin Pace be at the Senior Bowl?”
He’s doing a scouting internship.
Pace is a very bright guy, and it looks like he’s ready for the next stage of his life, and might want to get into scouting . . .
You know Todd Bowles loves his Temple Owls. I’m sure he will be impressed with what he saw from Temple cornerback Tavon Young today. He’s not the biggest corner around (5-10, 174), but man is he feisty. He doesn’t back down from anyone. He made several nice plays today . . .
If you were to design a 3-4 defense end in a laboratory, he would look like Illinois’ Jihad Ward. He’s 6-6, 295 and carries it so well.
He’s an undervalued talent because of how bad Illinois has been.
The Philly-native will on the Jets radar . . .
What an arm on North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz!
I was standing by a fence watching the North team practice, and he threw a deep out on the left sideline. The ball was incomplete. There was a miscommunication of some kind with the receiver. Remember, this is the first practice for a lot of these quarterbacks and receivers together.
So the pass came right at me. It hit the fence right in front of me.
Obviously, I didn’t have a jugs gun, but, I thought the pass might knock the fence over. Perfect spiral, tremendous velocity.
Of course I’m not going to get too crazy over one throw, but watching him today, and seeing how he conducts himself (very bright), I think he will be the first quarterback taken.
6-5, 235 and can make all the throws.
If he somehow slips to 20, which is highly unlikely, the Jets need to consider him.
Ryan Fitzpatrick is a free agent, and neither Bryce Petty and Geno Smith are slam dunk long-term answers . . .
Speaking of arm strength, I think USC’s Cody Kessler is going to have a hard time on the next level based on what I saw today.
While arm strength isn’t everything, he threw too many floaters . . .
I saw two Jets scouts talking to Penn State’s Carl Nassib after practice today.
He had 15.5 sacks for PSU in 2015.
I’m just not sure what position he would play for the Jets.
He’s 6-6, 270. Do you have him bulk up to 290 and play end, or have him drops 10-15 pounds an play outside linebacker?
It will be interesting to see how he tests at the combine.
