Morris County – A couple of different items to get into today in Website Whispers . . .
Jets special teams coach Brant Boyer was definitely taken aback by this question.
A reporter, who drives the Jets batty, asked Boyer today – Do you practice trick plays in practice?
He took a second to gather his thoughts, and then answered the question
“There was one last week, I don’t know if you guys saw that, by New Orleans,” Boyer said. “That was used a couple of years ago. To be honest with you, I’ve never been one of those kind of guys very much. Those kind of plays can either really hurt you or really help you. But, I’m more of Steady Eddie kind of guy that would like to just get a normal return and everything like that. At some point, those returns are going to break. That’s kind of how I think.”
The question put him a really tough spot. I think the question was a little out of line. We aren’t allowed to report on trick plays in practice, so should we ask about them?
Does Boyer want to tell the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and other future opponents, that they are practicing some trick plays.
He did a nice job of taking a step back in his mind to come up with an answer that would work.
First he brought up a Saints trick play, and then he said he’s not into that stuff. I’m not sure that is entirely true, but why the heck would he talk about working on trick plays?
He works on trick plays. There is no doubt about it, but he’s not going to talk about them in a press conference . . .
Another item from a press conference today I want to get into, and it involved Jets offensive coordinator John Morton.
Today was his first press conference in a couple of weeks, so this was the first time he was asked about Matt Forte criticizing the play calling after the Atlanta game. Forte was upset that the Jets didn’t run more in that game, and surprisingly vented to the media, instead going right to the coach.
Morton was asked myriad questions about this, and expressed no dismay with Forte for essentially throwing him under the bus.
This is no surprise.
He was going to throw raw meat to the Lions.
Not a smart thing to do in this market.
But if you think for one second he wasn’t pissed at Forte for doing what he did, you are kidding yourself. And he did show a little ankle in this answer.
“Listen, after the game, players are emotional, coaches are emotional, and sometimes they say things maybe they shouldn’t say,” Morton said. “But listen, I’m cool with that, I don’t have a problem with that at all. We all talked about it and life goes on. I listen. If guys want to do certain things, alright. As long as it’s good for the team, let’s do it.”
By saying, “sometimes they say things maybe they shouldn’t say,” he made it clear he wasn’t thrilled.
But he was very supportive of Forte in this press conference, and didn’t turn this into a brush fire.
