Foxboro – A few things to get into following the Jets loss to New England.
Moving forward, the Jets shouldn’t try not to reinvent the wheel with player personnel.
What I mean by that is if a player isn’t good at something with his previous team, don’t expect him to be good at it with you.
Buster Skrine was an inconsistent cover guy and extremely penalty prone in Cleveland, so what did they expect with the Jets? We have see four years of myriad blown coverages and penalties from this player. Nothing changed from Cleveland, and nobody should have expected it to. He’s tough as heck as a tackler and hitter, but the coverage stuff is a rollercoaster ride.
As I mentioned many times, Jets linebacker Avery Williamson was often taken off the field in 2017 by former Titans defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau because the legendary coach felt that Williamson was a liability in coverage.
So the Jets sign him and make him a full-time linebacker again.
Today, in Foxboro, he was beat by running back Rex Burkhead for an 18-yard touchdown.
Look, I understand if he’s covering a speedster like Dion Lewis, that could be a problem at times, but Burkhead is far from a speedster. Williamson should be able to keep up with this cat.
I actually think Williamson is a solid player – very good against the run and a good blitzer, but he has not been great in space with the Jets.
And that was the same problem with with the Titans.
Moving forward, Mr. Coffee needs to sign guys with his eyes entirely wide open.
If they couldn’t do something well with their previous team, don’t expect them to do that well with you . . .
With Trumaine Johnson benched today due to lateness, the Jets started Rashard Robinson at cornerback in his place. He got beat several times today and had no PD’s. He’s a world class athlete with great speed and leaping ability, but he’s too often a tick late reacting in coverage.
For some strange reason Robinson has been ahead of Derrick Jones, who was buried on the bench, and was often inactive this year.
Jones was the better player this summer, and he proved to be the better player today. He was one of the few Jets defensive backs who played well today.
If took the lateness of Johnson and Daryl Roberts to finally get Jones on the field.
It was absolutely ridiculous for Robinson to be ahead of Jones this year, especially considering he was suspended early this year for possession of marijuana candy. When he came back, why was he immediately head of Jones in the pecking order?
I can’t blame the GM for this because he did a nice job of picking Jones in the sixth round last year, but if the coach won’t play him, what can Maccagnan do? . . .
Speaking of solid draft picks by Mr. Coffee, we saw today that the Jets miss Brandon Shell. I was mistaken to say there is no dropoff from Brandon Shell to Brent Qvale. That’s not true. Qvale had a rough on today.
Tre Flowers beat Brent Qvale off the edge and caused fumble middle third that was returned for a TD by Kyle Van Noy. Qvale also had two penalties.
Qvale isn’t a bad player, but Shell is better and improved a lot this year . . .
I will get into the Bowles situation more once they make a move. We will plenty of time in the coming days to cover and analyze that.
The league’s website announced he’s expected to be fired. So when the NFL’s own media arm says that, you should expect it to happen.
