I’m going to tell you exactly how I feel about the Jets’ loss of Quincy Enunwa for the season to a neck injury.
First off, the most important thing is the kid’s health. A bulging neck disc isn’t something to mess around with.
For his sake, hopefully surgery can fix this serious issue.
But I think people are blowing this injury way out of proportion from a football standpoint.
Could they use Enunwa – no doubt about it.
But I’m going to say right here, exactly what I wrote in the training camp preview issue of the magazine – Enunwa is still a #3 receiver.
There was a foolish narrative out there once Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker were out of the building that Enunwa was the now the Jets #1 receiver.
Enunwa isn’t a #1 receiver regardless of who left the building. Departures don’t make somebody what they are not.
Enunwa isn’t a transcendent talent. He’s powerfully built receiver, who is a superb blocker, and has inconsistent hands. He’s also a little stiff athletically, so he doesn’t gain a lot of separation when he cuts away from defensive backs.
He was at his best two years ago when Marshall and Decker were both healthy and playing on a high level. He did a nice job of taking advantage of light coverage, due to all the attention Marshall and Decker were receiving. He did a great job blocking for the Jets’ running game the last two years.
But to sit here and act like this injury is going to ruin the Jets’ season is ridiculous in my opinion, Solid player, but not an irreplaceable talent.
I asked a Jets reporter today, “Did the Jet lose Jerry Rice?”
To me, that pretty much sums up the overreaction to his injury.
First off, let me tell you who the two most impressive weapons in the Jets’ passing game have been in their mini-camp and first week of their training camp – Jalin Marshall and Austin Seferian-Jenkins.
They both have been dominant.
Now, obviously, this leads to another problem for the Jets – they are both face league suspensions at the beginning of the season – Marshall for four games and Seferian-Jenkins for two games.
But they have been the two most impressive guys.
Robby Anderson is having a good camp.
The X-Factor in the Jets’ receiving room is Marquess Wilson, who has looked good in camp. The Bears loved this guy, and had big plans for him, but he broke his foot three times. The only reason he’s not in Chicago anymore is the foot, not the talent. And he could be a good replacement for Enunwa because he’s a big receiver at 6-3.
Another big receiver who has looked solid is Charone Peake. He’s done a nice job of running quick slants, a bread-and-butter route in the West Coast Offense. He’s also looked good as a blocker. He’s a very physical player. Peake has a similar skill set to Enunwa, but is faster.
Other receivers having good camps include Chris Harper and Myles White. Neither is a rookie and both have made several stops in the league, so they aren’t as green as you might think.
The Jets two draft picks receivers, both coming off spring injuries, have been kind of quiet, I’m throwing that out there because I’m sure a lot of you are wondering about that, especially with the Enunwa injury. I think they are still getting into the grove after missing time.
Also, keep in mind, when thinking about the Jets’ passing game, they are going to throw to running backs Matt Forte and Bilal Powell a ton in this offense. A ton!
Once again, the Jets certainly could use Enunwa this year.
But I really don’t think this injury is going to ruin their season.
