Time for a heaping helping of Friday Night Whispers . . .
Gil Brandt posted the highest burn rate for the defensive backs through 13 weeks.
Highest burn % (through Wk 13) Kareem Jackson 69% TJ Carrie 66% Buster Skrine 65% Marcus Peters 65% Logan Ryan 63% Patrick Chung 62% Jamar Taylor 62% Jason McCourty 62% Vernon Hargreaves 61%.
So Buster Skrine gets beat 65 percent of the time he’s thrown at.
That obviously isn’t ideal, but Todd Bowles seems to have a blind spot.
Justin Burris is back this week from a concussion.
He’s had a rough season.
But the Jets coaches roll with these guys.
So this Denver game is more dangerous than people realize.
While the Broncos have been struggling, they have two very good receivers – Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders – and the Jets cornerbacks situation after Mo Claiborne is very shaky.
Look out.
I’m sorry to belabor the point, but the Jets cornerback situation isn’t ideal right now.
And the Jets seem to be in a little bit of denial about it . . .
The Jets got a scare the other day with Robby Anderson tweaking his hamstring.
But the team’s trainer, John “Unchained” Mellody, did a nice job of handling the situation, along with the player.
They backed off his work before he exacerbated the problem, and he’s good to go know.
Speedsters like this are given to pulled muscles, and Anderson is always seen at Jets practice doing extra stretching, above and beyond what the team does.
And the plan has worked well.
When Anderson’s status was iffy early in the week, I was thinking how much that would impact the Jets’ offense if he couldn’t go.
The impact Anderson is having goes beyond the plays he’s making himself, which are significant.
All the extra attention he’s garnering from opposing defenses is opening up space for other Jets players to make plays.
Just look at Jermaine Kearse last week against Kansas City with nine catches. The Chiefs were consistently covering Kearse with single coverage and he was taking advantage of it.
Look at those two wide open catches Matt Forte had over the short middle last week.
And Anderson also helps the Jets’ running game with his deep speed by taking a safety out of the box.
So Anderson playing is huge for the Jets in Denver.
He has such a positive trickle-down effect on their entire offense . . .
Some made such a big deal about Todd Bowles statement the other day about Josh McCown being the Jets’ quarterback the rest of the season.
First of all, it’s the right decision. He’s playing on a high level.
Secondly, don’t feel bad for Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg.
Reporters ran over to their lockers en masse on Wednesday, the day Bowles made it clear he’s sticking with McCown the rest of the season, to ask them how each felt about the decision.
Look, Hackenberg didn’t earn the right to play in regular season games this year based on his preseason performance.
And Petty is a decent #2 quarterback.
Don’t feel bad for either. They are both on an active roster, not a practice squad, and make a nice salary. They are both fortunate to be on an NFL active roster in 2017.
Don’t feel sorry for either.
A lot of people would love to trade places with both of them.
