Injury report scares some people . . .
As far as I’m concerned, if you are an NFL receiver, who made an NFL roster, you should be able to go out there and make things happen on game day.
It’s really hard to make an NFL team at receiver. Every year we see many capable player released on the final cut-down.
And if you look at secondary leagues like the CFL or the Arena League, you always see a lot of receiver talent.
In other words, there is no shortage of quality receiver talent on this planet.
The Jets will be without Quincy Enunwa and Robby Anderson. Obviously, Terrelle Pryor was released last week with an injury settlement.
They still have one of their starters – Jermaine Kearse.
So to compliment Kearse, they will have Andre Roberts (247 career reception and 14 touchdowns), Deontay Burnett (who played with Sam Darnold at USC), Charone Peake (tall, fast target – who had a drop last week, but that happens) and newcomer Rishard Matthews. Leonard Williams said today that the defensive coaches have been raving about how Burnett has looked at practice.
As Larry the Cable guys says, “Git-r-done.”
These guys are in the NFL. A lot of good receivers aren’t. They should be able to get the job done.
The Packers had a bunch of receivers out in their comeback win over San Francisco two weeks ago.
Quincy Enunwa has missed a lot of games with the Jets, and he was a sixth round pick. Very good player, but not irreplaceable.
Anderson has 17 catches in seven games. That is less than three catches a game. You can’t replace that production? I understand he’s a deep threat, but one thing he’s struggled with are 50-50 balls, jump balls (you saw that last week) – at 175 pounds he’s not equipped to win those. Very good player, but not Jerry Rice.
Look, I understand this isn’t ideal, but as far as I’m concerned, if you are a receiver on an NFL roster, you should be able to run routes, get open and catch the ball.
There are some elitists fans and reporters who will say, “I never heard of those guys, how can they be any good.”
Give them a chance. They are on an NFL roster. We aren’t talking about backup receivers in college.
And as a coach once told me, “quarterbacks make receivers, receivers don’t make quarterbacks.”
Look at all the late-round picks (Julian Edelman) and undrafted free agents (Danny Amendola, Wes Welker, Chris Hogan) who have shined in New England with Tom Brady.
The Jets QB needs to continue to improve and start going through his progressions better. He’s done a decent job as a rookie, but he needs to see the field a little better and stop bird-dogging his first read.
Also, Chris Herndon, who runs 4.6, and has terrific hands, has emerged as a threat, and Trenton
Cannon, who runs 4.4, could be a big factor in the passing game this week.
People can act like the sky is falling. I think this is a little overblown.
If the QB plays well, it shouldn’t be . . .
Todd Bowles has said repeatedly that if Spencer Long (finger/knee) can’t play on Sunday, it will be either Jon Harrison or Dakota Dozier at center.
Starting Dozier makes little sense, and I have nothing against the player.
The problem is he’s a lefty, and the ball comes up differently to the QB. Sam Darnold has enough to deal with, without having deal with a center snap that doesn’t feel right . . .
The Jets should be fine at running back as long as Isaiah Crowell stays healthy. In fact, he’s one of those backs that gets better the more carries he gets, and gets a lather going. He loves to beat up defenders over the course of a game . . .
