Watching the media portion of practice the last three days . . .
. . . it certainly looks like Jets left tackle Kelvin Beachum is going return to the lineup this week.
It’s funny how this stuff works. After the Cleveland game, people wanted Beachum out of town, but watching the last few games, they have clearly missed him.
He’s obviously not a Pro Bowl level left tackle, but he’s their best option now. Chuma Edoga is a better fit at right tackle.
And if Beachum returns, expect Edoga to move back to right tackle, supplanting Brandon Shell.
You get the sense the old regime like Shell better than the new regime . . .
Watching Neville Hewitt in practice this week, I see a player running full speed on his injured left knee. From what I hear, he’s not being held out for the knee, but it’s his neck injury. They are being extra careful with him because he had another neck injury in the past, so the are trying to error on the side of caution. However, he is expected to return in the near future.
With Hewitt out again, expect the trio of James Burgess, Brandon Copeland and Harvey Langi to rotate at ILB . . .
New Jets inside linebacker Paul Worrolow is tough has hell, but man is he small for an NFL linebacker. With his body type, he looks more like a safety or corner than linebacker. He looks like he’s about 225 pounds . . .
If looks like Vyncint Smith has grabbed the Jets’ kick return job from Ty Montgomery, and obviously Trenton Cannon, who just went on IR. Smith is probably the best option anyway due to his speed and and gliding running style. Montgomery isn’t fast enough to be a home run threat at kick returner, and Cannon is a little too indecisive. Smith has world class speed and seems to be very decisive picking a seem and shooting into it . . .
Gregg Williams was asked about missing his two starting cornerbacks today. To me, this fact means very little because neither one of them was playing well. I asked Williams today about the pass coverage, which has been underwhelming. He did admit it needs to get better.
The Jets play at cornerback needs to get a lot better, and perhaps it is time, anyway, injuries or not, to get some new people in the mix. It’s time to see what Blake Countess, Bless Austin, Art Maulet and newly-added Maurice Canady can do. To be honest, I would use Marcus Maye in some cornerback roles at times. He runs 4.5. Things need to change at this position. We can talk about Adam Gase and the Jets’ offense until the cows come home, but the Jets’ poor cornerback play all year, along with an almost non-existent edge-rush, has hurt this team.
Last week, Ryan Fitzpatrick was playing throw and catch like it was a 7-on-7 drill . . .
Perhaps with an eye toward the future, the Jets now have two centers on their practice squad – Jimmy Murray (Holy Cross) and Leo Koloamatangi (Hawaii) . . .
