The Jets did nothing wrong here . . .
Jets wide receiver Quincy Enunwa blasted the Jets’ organization on Twitter for fining him $27,900 for missing two scheduled treatments on his season-ending neck injury.
“Given everything that’s going on around the team I thought this could’ve been handled so many different ways,” tweeted Enunwa. “I’ve spent my time with the team trying to build myself up to be dependable and hardworking so this [stuff] hurts.
“I missed those two days because I took my VETERAN wife out for Veteran’s Day lunch and because I had to handle an emergency in my house. I let the team know this after the fact, and, yes, I should have told them beforehand, but I feel like this was excessive.”
It’s unclear what the Jets did wrong here. The rules are the rules. And if you can’t make it, you call ahead and reschedule.
What’s this about, “Given everything that’s going on around the team.”
Is he trying to attach this to the Kelechi Osemele situation? Apples and oranges.
As for taking his veteran wife out for Veteran’s day, how about taking her out for breakfast or dinner if you have a scheduled treatment?
Some in the media are going to take this an opportunity to pile on the Jets who are having a rough season, but I fail to see what they did wrong here.
Enunwa is playing in the victim card, but hard to see his case here.
Late last year, the man was given a 4-year deal for $36 with $20 million guaranteed, and has yet to play a regular season game since signing that contract, and he’s the victim here because he failed to show up for two rehab sessions? He’s basically getting $20 million to rehab.
The JC verdict – Enunwa deserved the fine and the Jets did nothing wrong.
Next case . . .
Jets have 23 players on their injury report. The Redskins have nine. The Jets have had very long list for a while. Obviously not all these players are out, but you wonder if the length of the list is a little to sell a narrative.
Look, every player in the NFL is basically dealing with something at this point of the season, so when it comes to players who are going to play and practice full, some teams list them with whatever, others just leave them of . . .
The Jets have the NFL’s #2 rush defense. That is impressive. The problem is too often teams throw at will on them.
They allowed four touchdowns to a rookie QB last week. That is inexcusable.
So the Jets are kind of like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the NFL’s #1 rush defense, but #32 pass defense.
Hey, it’s great you can stop the run, but what difference does it make if the other team can dominate you through the air.
While Adam Gase perhaps hasn’t done the best job in his first year as Jets coach, the team’s cornerback situation has hurt his operation, leading to a lot of points scored, and putting extra pressure on the offense.
People are quick to point out that the Jets starting cornerbacks are out this week, but I think that’s an overrated angle. That tandem was struggling.
The Jets will likely start Art Maulet this week along with Bless Austin. Maulet might not be the fastest corner, but he’s feisty and doesn’t back down from anyone. The Jets can only hope they strike lightning in a bottle with Austin. He’s long, fast and smart. If he plays to his potential, he could be an early Christmas gift for the Jets.
But let’s stop making a big deal about the starting corners being out. That’s just semantics.
