Morris County – Reading the tea leaves . . .
. . . you get the sense that Chuma Edoga still has a shot at right tackle this week.
He was very active during the offensive line drills.
A little surprised they would start a rookie who missed practice reps this week with knee and ankle issues, but clearly they consider him their right tackle. It’s no longer up for debate.
But against Washington, he gave up two first quarter sacks to OLB Ryan Kerrigan, but the after Edoga got hurt, and Brandon Shell came in, there were no more problems with Kerrigan.
We will see what happens, but Edoga was moving around pretty well out there today . . .
Speaking of offensive line, the Jets are very fortunate to have Tom Compton, who is now starting for Brian Winters at right guard. He’s not a star, but he’s a pro’s pro who knows what he’s doing out there after eight years in the league. He did a nice job in his first Jet start a win over one of his former teams, the Washington Redskins.
Watching him in individual drills, I noticed for a 6-6 player, he does a nice job of playing low with a low pad level. This is so important, and can be a challenge, especially for tall linemen. He’s a solid guy to have around if you a starting guard . . .
Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams praised Arthur Maulet’s mettle.
“He’s extremely tough,” Williams said.
This is so true. He is a fearless cornerback – an unflinching hitter. That was obvious all summer.
Williams also praised his work ethic.
“He’s the first guy in here in the morning, last guy to leave at night,” Williams said. “He wants to be coached very hard.” . . .
Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby had four sacks last week. Whenever a player has that many sacks in a game, you wonder what the heck was going on with the tackle he was facing. You rarely see four sack games.
I went back at looked at the four sacks, and they all came against John Jerry, who a long-time guard, forced to play tackle due to injuries, and he very over-matched. He’s not a tackle.
Crosby is a good prospect, but not Reggie White.
I knew something was up here . . .
Adam Gase had high praise for Quinnen Williams this week.
“He’s doing his job,” Gase said. “He’s making sure he’s handling his gap. He’s being physical. He’s trying to either stalemate or get movement, get push back, getting other guys free in the pass-rush games. We would all love for 10 sacks and all these TFLs, but sometimes it doesn’t work out like that. As long as he’s doing his job and the coaches are happy with him, I think that’s what he’s looking to do.”
So you pick a guy third overall to not show up on the stat sheet with sacks and tackles, but to do the dirty work?
Look, I understand Gase trying to protect his player, but it’s hard to believe the Jets picked him that high too mainly do interior line dirty work.
Yes, there will always be some dirty work involved with interior line play, but they drafted him to help their interior rush, and not much happening there so far.
But in all fairness, it’s still pretty early for the kid who is still only 21.
However, it’s fair to say that Quinnen Williams will be attached at the hip with Jets strength coach Justus Galac next off-season. He needs to get a little bigger, stronger and more stout.
