Morris County – It’s time for a heaping helping of Friday Night Whispers. Let’s get this underway . . .
Demario Davis a great leader. Not a good leader, a great leader.
While Josh McCown is the leader of the Jets’ offense, Davis is the leader of the defense.
Mike Maccagnan’s decision on June 1 to trade safety Calvin Pryor to Cleveland for Davis was a masterstroke.
There is a lot of talk this week about David Harris because he’s now going to start in New England with Dont’a Hightower out for the season.
But Davis is the better player and better leader than Harris right now.
I’m not saying this to cast aspersions on Harris, but this is based on my close observations being around this team for many years.
Harris used to be a better player than Davis, but not now. Davis is better as we sit here in 2017. Harris has lost a step.
As for leadership, Harris was more a leader by example. He’s as quiet as a church mouse. Davis isn’t only a leader by example, but a fiery, vocal, alpha dog.
Davis gave a fire-and-brimstone speech to the Jets earlier this week that really resonated with his teammates.
Great trade by Mr. Coffee . . .
Speaking of good moves by Mr. Coffee – Jamal Adams has been a terrific addition to the Jets. While he’s been far from perfect, we all see his play-making ability. He should be a fixture in the Pro Bowl for years to come. He has great instincts and toughness.
And his energy on the practice field and in games is infectious.
Watching him practice, he is so vocal out there – getting teammates fired up – joking around when necessary, and being serious when necessary. He keeps the Jets energized with his electric persona . . .
Buster Skrine is out with a concussion.
On a human level, hopefully he gets better real soon. Concussions are a horrible thing to go through.
But reading about this injury in different places, you would think they lost Aaron Glenn.
“Cornerback Buster Skrine is dealing with his third concussion in the past two years,” wrote ESPN. “Assuming he doesn’t play Sunday, the secondary will be unsettled against Julio Jones & Co. Skrine is the only experienced slot corner on the roster.”
In the Jets’ last game, a loss to Miami, Skrine gave up two touchdowns (maybe three – was in area of a third TD – can’t 100 confirm it was his fault) and was flagged for three penalties.
And the loss of this player makes the Jets secondary “unsettled?” Explain that to me.
What does “experienced” mean if you don’t play well?
I know the media loves Skrine because he’s nice to them and gives them a lot of quotes, but this coverage of this injury is bizarre.
Once again – speedy recovery to Skrine, but some people in the media need a reality check. Jets should have moved on from this player, who is a heck of a nice guy, last off-season.
Or maybe I need a tin-foil hat . . .
Juston Burris, who could have a bigger role this week with Skrine out, was having some kind of ointment rubbed on his back at the beginning of practice. Does he have a back problem?
I think it’s time for the Jets to kick the tires on rookie cornerback Derrick Jones. Watching him, he has a very impressive size-speed ratio and good ball skills.
But the one thing I don’t know, because he hasn’t played yet, is if he has the defense down. Of course, the coaches aren’t going to tell us that.
If he does, it’s time to play him.
Looked like a sixth-round steal to me in training camp.
