Is there a disconnect between the pickers and the game day decisions?
It looked like both Jets kickers suffered some kind of injury in Baltimore.
After the game, punt Lach Edwards had his lower right leg heavily wrapped, and Sam Ficken left the locker room with a doctor to get to another room. This is often for an X-Ray . . .
Jets linebacker James Burgess said one of the Jets biggest problems on defense in this game was they didn’t set the edge very well.
So true.
They kept letting Lamar Jackson, and other runners get outside on them.
The Jets have got to fix these edge positions in the off-season, not just from a pass rushing standpoint, but they need to get guys with enough speed to keep guys from taking the edge on them.
One of the problem is they keep rolling with certain guys not getting it done, and perhaps Gase is too hands off with the defense, and isn’t demanding that Williams make some much-needed personnel changes, but is afraid to step on his toes since Williams is the defensive boss.
For instance, what happened to Harvey Langi and Frankie Luvu, two athletic, quick defensive ends who can increase the athleticism and speed at the position a tad.
They both seem to be in the Witness Protection Program.
They also need to get John Frankin Myers in the mix on the interior.
Do something for goodness sake to improve the speed and athleticism of the front seven which is killing this defense . . .
Gregg Williams has been dealt a bad hand, but also didn’t have a good game calling the Jets defense.
The Jets edge-rush was almost non-existent and their cornerback situation is far from ideal, but with all that being said, Williams didn’t have one of his better games lording over the Jets’ defense.
That plays in the second quarter when Neville Hewitt was called for pass interference on a deep pass to Hollywood Brown was pretty hard to believe. Why, under any circumstances, would an inside linebacker be asked to cover a receiver with world class speed deep? This is a scenario that should never happen under ANY circumstances. We don’t even need to get into the weeds on the play call. This should NEVER happen!
Also, some of the personnel utilization made little sense considering the opponent.
First of all, anybody who thinks Jordan Jenkins, should be one of the main guys setting the edge against the most dynamic running QB in football, needs to re-think that one.
Jenkins has great character and gives you everything he’s got, but he has limited speed, quickness, quick twitch and athleticism, so how on earth is he going to deal with Jackson?
This is a game where you get athletic edge guys like Luvu and Langi more in the mix. Throw the damn depth chart in the garbage?
Also, why does Henry Anderson play on the jumbo package near the goalline, and this isn’t the first time this has happened. You get your big bodies out there near the goal line, not a lean 6-6, 290-pounder playing in the middle of the line. This makes no sense.
And then you play a cornerback at safety when there are three veteran reserve safeties on the roster?
I’m not saying the Jets have the best roster, but at least use what you have better.
Joe Douglas needs to become the football czar and have strong imput on who the coaches play on game day. The current structure isn’t working.
