Gailey on Patriots defense Dan Leberfeld

Q)What challenges does the New England defense present?

Chan Gailey: They do a great job of trying to create indecision. They put a lot of people in a lot of different spots especially on third down. They try to create confusion for you. Our communication will have to be at its peak to make sure we get everything right for this week.

Q)Bill Belichick seems to like to take away the top one or two weapons . . .

Gailey That’s what they do. They basically double or roll up to a receiver or they load the box if it’s a running back. Whatever it might be, they do a good job of making sure that they have a plan to stop your leading producers.

Q)Does Belichick vary his defense each week?

Gailey: They seem to come up with some creative ways to do things from time to time. Most of the time he’s ended up doing something unusual and different when we’ve played him.

Q)Has New England changed their schemes over the years?

Gailey: They haven’t. What they do is they sit there and try to scheme ways to stop what you do best. That’s what they do year in and year out, week in and week out. That’s how they’ve been successful. The wrong term is ‘guess right’, but if you can get the right match-ups at the right times that’s when you have the chance to make some plays.
